Premier League: Relegation Race

So we can close this thread now until next January?

Great chance for us to get a result against Leicester on Sunday too with Ndidi and Vardy out, I'd be happy with a draw in that one and then we kick on to some slightly more winnable fixtures (Southampton, Leeds, Newcastle).

I wouldn't be so sure

I guess you'd hope he wouldn't be fit for 90 minutes. But then I thought that about Saka last night!
Penalties aside, from memory I don't think Vardy has had too much success against us in the past due to how deep our back line is. Obviously if we play a 4 higher up that could change

Yep last season I don't think we allowed him to have a single shot in either fixture. Nuno obviously recognised him as the main threat to keep quiet.

Even if he does play, Maddison is one to prevent getting the ball too. In fact wouldn't surprise me if Donck started for that reason

Think that penalty this season is his only goal against us?

Coady pulled off a worldie of a goal line clearance off him when we beat them in Nuno's first pre-season.

He always looks dangerous against us but hasn't had too much reward. They're quite an odd team, I never know quite what to make of them. When it all clicks they're as good as anyone bar City/Liverpool but it's quite a flawed set up, midfield is piss weak if Ndidi is missing which he has been quite a bit lately. Also for all his plaudits last season I cannot be convinced by Soyuncu, plays on the edge far too much.

Yeah Rodgers is an excellent coach, I really rate him but they do have their moments.

He solved the Ndidi issue last time by dropping quite deep but harder to do that without Vardy. They should be fine against Fulham regardless but I'd definitely be playing the 4231 just to try and match them in the middle but still have wide options. Last time they played a diamond/box midfield to do that to us though, but if we have more forward options you'd hope we'd try and play through/past that quicker.

But who do you drop for Dendoncker? Moutinho?

We need to stick to 4 at the back. We just need to get better at it.

Last night the issue was it was often a 4-2-4!

Under MM we played a 4 with zero pace and inferior players and you didn’t think we were “wide open” every time we lost the ball.

We can still play a deeper line with the 4 and just be a little bit more patient in possession. Rather than just being gung ho, head down, run forward, lose it, shit we’ve only got 4 men behind the ball (3 CBs and an immobile Neves).

Need to rein it in a little bit whilst we get better playing it.

The difference with MM teams is that they defended as a team (often at the expense of very turgid football) and that is what this team need to get better at doing.

Neto and Traore are too used to staying up I think in a 3-4-3 as your wing backs will get back, the back 3 will cover it or Neves/Moutinho normally get into a defensive position.

Part of Kilman's problem last night was that he just had absolutely nobody covering or communicating with him.

Tough one tbf, with Donck's form I think it will be Neves and Moutinho fitness permitting.

Tbf, a Nuno team defends far better as a team than a Mick team either did. The only time we looked solid in the Premier League under Mick was when we played that 451 with Mancienne holding hands with Henry and Foley protecting Zubar. Doyle and Jarvis were the only forward players at all.

The fact they 'targeted ' him for the first twenty minutes made him look worse than he was plus having zero help from Neto in front made his first half hour quite poor

Kilman's problem is that he's shaped like a pear and he'd struggle in a race with me, and I'm nearly for...er, in my 30s.

Nothing can fix either of those things. Massive respect for his journey but personally I'd never pick him again unless we had to and I'd bin him off in the summer.

What a horrible time that was!

I know what you mean, but I just think some of our forward players could do better at their defensive duties - Podence particularly. It's not that I want us backs-to-walls with all of our players in their own half, but I do think Semedo and Kilman (or Jonny going forwards) will need a bit of help sometimes, particularly against the likes of Saka.

Oh absolutely. Not that I ever want to see him at LB ever again. It looked exactly what it was: a slow CB playing full-back.

If he has to play left back because Saiss/RAN aren't back in time I can cope with it for the time being. He seems like a quick learner so he'll have taken a lot from that experience.

Definitely have to decided between him/Saiss in the summer in terms of squad options. One of them needs to be fourth choice. I think I'd try to convince Swansea to loan him if they don't go up! They have a good defensive set up under Cooper.

To be fair, of all of them, you see Podence coming back the most of all the attackers, but then his 'free reign' should allow him to do that, the angriest I've been in a while was in the Palace game when Traore was stood still and Donck had to run past him to help Semedo out !

Traore was equally as infuriating last night - and it was his fellow teammates getting just as infuriated (heard Coady shout "come on Adama!" at one stage). He just loses the ball, sighs and doesn't bother to get it back. I think his twin brother must have played the Palace game and the first half of last night, as he was different in second - pressing, harassing, taking his man on.

Teams and players in this division are openly terrified of him - see Leno's rash decision last night. He really needs to become more of a presence in games.

And for goodness sake stop trying to dribble out of four players on the edge of our penalty box. You ALWAYS lose it and it is frustrating.
