Premier League: Relegation Race

Yes. It’s a fairly similar number of goals per game. Another sixteen games from Big Sam and the count could eclipse both marks.

I know the points doesn't reflect it but that Swindon side are the worst to have ever been in the prem. Bar Fjorttoft they were abject in ever area.

Didnt Hoddle get them promoted and them take the Chelsea job, which meant losing by far their best player as well as the manager in one go.
Didnt help that they appointed the bloke who put out the cones John Gorman as his replacement.

This is what my concern was. Much closer to the mire at the end of the weekend than the start and with no real on-pitch progress to hold onto, so we look the team least likely to string one of these runs together currently.

Sheff Utd v West Brom L
Spurs v West Brom L
West Brom v Man Utd

Fulham v Leicester L
Fulham v West Ham D
Everton v Fulham

Wolves v Arsenal W
Wolves v Leicester D
Southampton v Wolves

Looking at the above I can't help but worry we are likely to be closer to the bottom sides than we are today.

Current gap and points since

Wolves +4
Fulham 12
West Brom 15

My worry is significantly less than before, not completely gone just yet, but much more confident that even we surely couldn't mess this up. Especially with another win or a draw v Southampton, its not just the points but the performances have looked better, still not good but the fight and desire is back. Kilman and Jonny both with the blocks we associated us with over the last two years.

We've got 15 games left and I can realistically see 4-5 wins in those (although I think it will be closer to 7 or 8). We will be more than fine.

Relegation = No.
The belief in themselves is back. We do need to figure out our scoring, but when we do we'll be at least mid table, and maybe better. That is what i hope anyway..

Yeah, I had a little wobble in and around the Chorley game because let’s face it, if we’d carried on playing like that we would probably have ended up being relegated.

It probably says a lot about my poor mental state throughout January that I was even slightly concerned because we were never going to carry on being that bad for any sustained period of time realistically.

There is a lot of healing needed to be done over the summer though peeps, in lots of ways.

The only possible danger to us is if Fulham go on a miraculous run and get close to 40 points. Even then requires ourselves to pick up less than a point per game.
Fulham have blown 2 away fixtures with draws against Albion and BHA and only drawn 1 of 2 home games this week. Even if that occurs you also need all of BHA, Newcastle and Burnley to out perform us.

Are we still doing this miraculous Fulham run? That's Fulham who have won 2 games all season, not one of those in over 2 months/12 games.

Hence the word “miraculous” hardly an endorsement that it’s definitely going to happen

We're 12 points clear and Fulham have a game in hand. If we hadn't got results against Arsenal and Chelsea that would be 8.

If it was still 8 with a game in hand and we've still got to play Fulham that would make me a bit more nervous tbh.

Fulham's game in hand is against Burnley. They can't both win.

Given we have a double shot at it (in theory at least, I mean we genuinely are closer to Everton in 7th than Fulham in 18th) then there's more chance of us qualifying for Europe than going down.

Well done to Nuno & the boys for the last couple of games. I was one of the people adamant that we were in a “relegation fight”, in & around the Chorley performance - but these last couple of results against Arsenal and Leicester have alleviated any fear I had of us going down (as well as the fact the current bottom three haven’t managed to put any results together themselves).

I still think there’s some major work required in the summer to bring in 2-3 readymade first teamers - and then of course the formation/tactical issues which need to be addressed and settled on. But for now, credit has to be given to Nuno and the players for stopping the rot.

I don't think anyone would dispute that under the normal run of things, we were displaying relegation form (at least in terms of results, and Chorley was definitely the mark of a team who would fit the bill as relegation candidates, we were shocking).

However the bottom three were never ever going to make up the points, even if we'd carried on as we were. They are all massively out of their depth. Sheff Utd have no strikers worthy of the name and the worst keeper in the league by a mile, Albion are hilariously poor for this level (yes I know we lost to them, somehow, they scarcely deserved it though) and Fulham just don't win.

Fortunately , there are 3 absolutely shocking sides this season. They are already adrift and its a competition to see who will finish bottom. My money is on WBA. We had a really poor run and it highlighted a number of areas that need addressing during the remainder of this season and before the start of next. We desperately need a more creative midfield option as well as looking at Moutinho's upgrade. If we are playing a 4 at the back ( and the signs are there that it is wanted) the a partner for Boly is required. It may be that we grind out a few dour games and points to ensure safety before we try any more experimentation.

The bottom 3 are probably where you'd expect (maybe a bit unfair on Sheff utd) and while some or all of them might improve a bit, they'll revert to type though so unlikely to put any thing like a good run together.
We on the other hand have underperformed (results wise anyway) for a couple of months. You'd expect us to eventually pick up form and results.......the last 2 games are a good start

The last two games are a great start, this time last week i was considering buying some brown couderoid trousers. Three more wins and were sorted.

None of the bottom three are getting 36+ points, not a hope. We don't need three wins.

Think about the kind of form they would have to go on from here to get to that mark, out of absolutely nowhere, with the transfer window now SLAMMED SHUT.

More than a fair chance that at least two of them won't even match what we have now. Possibly all of them.
