Pre-season friendly thread

Is Boly going to be fit, do we know?

I think Marcal at CB has to the way to go with the new injuries (probably whether we sign anybody or not).
As long as it's not Hoever.

It'll probably end up being Kilman - Coady - Saïss Vs Leicester.

I felt we were better against Stoke than Coventry, despite the score.

What really stood out was how effortlessly we kept the ball and actually probed from non counter attacking scenarios.

The Neves/Jimenez goals were actually worked brilliantly. They were totally different to the type of goals we scored last season and augur well.

Defensive mistakes still abound. No point playing good football if you give your opponent a goal headstart every game

So based on what we have seen in pre season we are definitely playing higher and we also look to get more in and around the box. That’s a real plus. We seem to have changed to man for man at corners too? I hope Mosquero is ok too. He has been a real plus. Big Leander looks more accomplished too and there seems to be more pace snap and zip about our attacks. It also puts to bed the myth that Lage can only go 442 as we have been 3/5 at the back mostly. A couple of the goals conceded have been soft but we have scored some great goals in response. Hoever Neves MGW all scored very neat finishes after good passes or movement. Traore looks a beast up from and that is exactly where he should stay. None of this RWB shite. The jury is out a bit on Trincao as he needs to toughen up a bit for the premier league. But considering all the changes we do not look in bad shape at all. Hopefully all the injuries clear and we get a couple of new signings in too.

but we were worried about how badly we were zonal marking too?

Obviously regardless of set up, we just want to defend set pieces effectively. I just personally think a zonal set up (with some man to man marking) is more effective.

The last team I can properly remember purely man marking at set pieces was Cardiff under Warnock and they were terrible at defending set pieces I think.

We definitely need to cut out the individual errors defensively. Those are what have caused us more problems than the system we are playing. Lapses in concentration, poor control, poor passes have all led to goals against in pre season. No system/style of play would legislate for players having brain farts. The players just need to play better.

I'm tempted to go on Saturday and take my daughter for her first games as it's cheap (if she wants to go of course).

Normally I sit in the Steve Bull as I know which seat numbers have the best view, but if my daughter's coming I should probably pick a stand that is a bit less of a crush inside! Never sat in the new North Bank before so may give it a try.

If I go I’m going to try North Bank lower just for a change. I’m 50/50 about whether to attend.
