****POLL NOW IN OP****Who do you want next?

Obviously not an entirely new squad but I reckon 3-4 additions.

I don't think we'd have gotten that many under Nuno, in my opinion anyway.
We would have certainly got some new options under Nuno i believe. Another fly in the ointment now is players that were loyal to Nuno, plus the loanees . Will they sign, or will they want to leave?
It could be carnage.
The only saving grace would be (for me) is if the new guy is happy to work with what we have, apart from a couple of new additions. At least we wouldn't need to rip up the playbook and start again. The back room staff is a whole different ball game. The old team completely revolutionised the way the club worked in the background. What happens now?
Maybe JDR knows who Lage's backroom staff were, and will they be following him.

and as I've said every time you say that, the comparison of offering a manager you couldn't ordinarily get versus one you wouldn't ordinarily want, doesn't hold up
But the process of shortlisting them is exactly the same, and that seems to be your biggest bugbear. Either you're happy with Mendes bringing people in or not, whether it's a Nuno or a Lage, seems a bit hypocritical to like it when it brings you supposed good things but pour scorn when you're not so impressed.

Not really, when the relationship worked for Wolves - bringing players and managers in the club wouldn't ordinarily attract I was in favour. Now he's taking money out of the club through obscene agents fees and bringing in a manager who it's unlikely would be appointed through a wider recruitment programme, I'm not. If he was representing Klopp I wouldn't have an issue with us not interviewing other candidates as like Nuno was at the time he'd be a class above what we could reasonably expect to attract. Lage isn't - we should have benchmarked him against other candidates

In most elite football it's not really unusual to change managers fairly regularly and have the entire backroom staff depart and a new manager with new ideas and philosophies come in.

In fact, it's pretty much the norm at most big clubs. I'm not sure it's something to welcome or fear, it's just how things are in the modern game, with teams constantly chasing success. We're just conscious of it cos we've had stability and consistency for a few years.

And if players aren't willing to work for a new boss several times in their career then they're in the wrong job. What exactly are these players you talk about being loyal to? The club pay their wage, Nuno's gone, he'll always be a club legend but will be in someone else's dugout before long

My biggest problem with Lage is that he's tactically inflexible. He got found out in Portugal and couldn't react to it. That'll happen even faster in the Premier League.

That and he tried to sign Adam Reach for Benfica...

It's why we go the young route - it doesn't pay off straight away but if you get a coach who can nurture and build it we could be onto something and finishing high if (big if) we keep the squad together and it clicks at the right time.

I'm not saying Lage is any more likely to do that than Nuno but clearly it's the strategy.

The young model is marvellous and the only really sustainable way for us to do things but with Lage where is that calmness when it doesn't go so well?

Lage at Benfica presided over Felix who would've more than likely exploded under any manager but he also presided over the worst run in their history.

Taking into account who Benfica are and the standard of the Primeria Liga that he didn't seem able to arrest that decline ought to be a huge red flag.

Coupling the inexperience of some squad members plus the inexperience of the manager and fairly intense speculation about the few senior players we have moving on (Joao, Rui) we could end up with a blind leading the blind situation thinking about it.

Lage should have done better, but it wasn't entirely his fault.
Nuno should have done better this season, but it wasn't entirely his fault. Two sides to that coin.

Trying to be objective, the general mood on Nunos appointment was wait and see while we had fans from Porto and Valencia telling us almost exactly what eventually would happen, that he would be end up being overly cautious and the football would be shit. So whilst I am on the fence, I am looking forward to what Lage brings rather than lamenting Nuno who brought plenty in a short time, but had the luck with injuries during that successful time meaning the impact of a small trusted nucleus of players was minimal. This season it conspired against him and the owners decided that they wanted better on the pitch ( mutually ).
Personally, I think Nuno would be a good fit for the Everton squad and ethos but a poor one for palace. If he goes to either well, good luck. At least Wolves would know how to play against them having lost 3 of those 4 games this season.
I think everyone is in agreement that this summers recruitment is paramount. The gnashing of teeth and wailing that is happening because of Nuno's departure helps no-one. I am 100% behind my club , but I 100% accept that Mendes and Fosun are very comfortable bed mates and that will only be tolerated if the partnership delivers the results. So far its been a bit down after a strong start , so I am looking at the summer with even more interest. I remain convinced Guedes is a done deal and we may also get a few more in. We will certainly lose some and that is no bad thing at times either. There were, for me , too many auto picks for Nuno . That led to off form players being guaranteed a start this season while the back up was considered too raw or too inexperienced to trust.
No-one can really predict what will happen with this appointment and this forum does seem very divided on it. Hope springs eternal and Lage could put a real spark back into the football we play , just like Bielsa.

I loved the Nuno the man, got to be honest though, I was never really worried about losing him to a big club because of the football he played. It's just wasn't entertaining enough.

He obviously tried to implement a more entertaining style in the season just gone but wasn't able to do it. I really wasn't looking forward to another season under Nuno, to me there weren't any signs he was capable of turning things around. Why with 3 centre backs couldn't we defend corners for example, really basic stuff. I think Nuno had been found out to a large extent and he wasn't able to adapt.

With regards Lage, no idea what will happen, I'm just looking forward to a change. It was getting so repetitive, boring and frustrating watching Wolves towards the end under Nuno.

He hasn't the best CV or massive pedigree, but then I'm seeing people say they'd prefer Potter. I like Potter and would have liked him as the next manager as well, I even voted for him in the poll on this thread, but what's he done in his career really? Is it just because he's English and more familiar to us.

I just don't really know what people expected to happen, we weren't going to get a massive name who's won loads like a Guardiola or a Klopp. Whoever came in would have to have had something to prove, otherwise realistically, they wouldn't be coming to Wolves. I can't really think of an alternative that would be levels above Lage, in terms of who we were capable of attracting to be honest.

Gnashing of teeth is a term I only ever see used on this forum, like TWF on term in many ways.

It wouldn't surprise me if we announce Lage today on the back of the hearing

Does Lage have a group of coaches he would be looking to bring with him? If so and the hearing for Lage is today, they might wait until his team all get the ok too.

Aye, it'll have given them a few days to work on a cool video, which may indeed sooth my ire completely. I am quite excited about the football he can potentially produce, and you've got to presume that he's going to be given some money to spend, which is always nuce

I think I'm excited for the change that is to come, there's something quite nice about him being an unknown quantity (whilst being equally terrifying, obviously).

I agree, I just hope it doesn't dissipate quickly...
