There’s a pretty good squad already in place. If a manager is struggling with this squad they shouldn’t be manager.
It shouldn’t be about being in a worse position than now but a far better one given the same staff.
I don’t think Lage is that man in much the same way I don’t think Zenga or Saunders were either.
It's not about the overall quality, it's about having the right players for their own game.
Let's say Lage, his tactic in Benfica worked marvellously in the first season. The squad worked well, but Felix was the lynchpin of his game upfront. Second year, Felix got sold off, and he struggled to find someone doing the same. He asked for a few upgrades, didn't get what the team really needed (that's another story), and it never took off. First half of the season was okay, then it went off the rails. To be fair, Benfica didn't deserve to win all the games it did, neither did it deserve to lose all the points it did.
There is quite a lot that can be thrown at the Benfica squad, though. They lacked (and still do) the will to play, there's no urgency, just complacency. They were treading around the pitch as if it didn't matter if they were playing or strolling in a shopping mall. That's not something Lage could fix, or Vitória before him, or now Jesus. Other things were really his fault though, he should have tried to mix more stuff up, to change or adapt his own system. Not sure how good that would have done anyway.
Wolves squad is great, small but great. But to sign Lage, or any other, some holes will need to be filled. For example, Lage, assuming he keeps his play from the first Benfica season, requires a player with the same qualities or occupying the same spaces that Felix did. Afaik, there's none.
