****POLL NOW IN OP****Who do you want next?

You missed the bit earlier where I'd said failing was in using it exclusively over a sustained period and then getting found out. Then somebody went all weird, said coach a lot, and missed the point.
Fair enough.

I have a habit of not listening, apologies.

But you said you wouldn't give a fuck if it was terrible as long you won.

Fuck it man, I'm out of the hysterical nonsense. Change the forum name to TNF for a few months of mourning and enjoy your little crywank over a stranger.

Give it 12 months with a competent replacement and no-one will give a fuck about what happened yesterday.
That might be a touch harsh, but it is worth pointing that the Dull as Ditchwater thread was started on October 25th last year...

Good riddance.

Of the Portuguese coaches linked

Bruno Lage? Fuck No.
Sérgio Conceição? Fuck No.
Rúben Amorim? Yes but unlikely.
Pedro Martins? Yes.
Paulo Fonseca? Yes.
Going way back here but Fonseca's Roma played an absurdly high line. We'd need some serious upgrades at CB to accommodate that, I think.

Not seen them, bit he did that with Chris Smalling at centre half?

Depends, if you are not stretched out too much as a team they could be fine...its when then team is about 70 meter long from first defender to last striker that becomes a BIG problem and the other team easily can play straight through you or just put it deep over the last defender..(if we only didnt sell Berra)

But, normally when playing a high line you need at least one quick fast CB to cover up

can we put a bid in for Kyle Walker please..soon out of city and superquick..i know he plays rb/rwb(please Booz no need to change the banner) he would be like a sweeper

I have a soft spot for Lage. But it can be a risky signing. It either goes very well or it will make Chernobyl seem like a playground.

Personally, I think it would be suicide to play Fonseca's brand of football with our current crop of CBs against the likes of City or Liverpool.

Conceição is a fucking scumbag and it's not like his football makes up for it either.

Porto have just been caught faking Covid tests btw. Benfica, Vitória and Man City all had outbreaks after playing Porto. That's the kind of operation he's running there. Do not want that stain anywhere near my club.

yes of course, you have to adjust depending who you play obviously :)

That run before he got the sack was abysmal. Vinícius and Pizzi on the wing and Seferovic up front as Benfica lose at home to Santa Clara... I dunno man, good managers don't do things like that.

Indeed, and this past year Fonseca adjusted to neither opponents nor the limits of his players.

Put him at Bayern and I would bet he'd play some of the most scintillating football around. At a club in our position, though? It would be asking for serious trouble, IMO.

True, but Benfica post-Covid was... weird. It got very weird. And not everything was Lage's fault. Rumour has it that a few players didn't enjoy being sidetracked by new signings. They had managed to run Vitória off the club and did the same to Lage.
Lage's football worked while Benfica had the right players for it. Then they sold Felix, never replaced him with anyone and it went to hell. Vinicius helped, but not even him could keep with the bullshit.

And by "they", I mostly mean the players who have less competitive ambition than a shrivelled potato.

EDit: And he did try to get more signings. No dice from Benfica board. The president is more worried about not being put in jail for the multiple crimes he has allegedly committed than what Benfica results are. He only invested in the team this last season because he was being roasted right before club elections. Benfica is his salvation. It is, quite literally, his credit line.
