Newcastle United (H) build up

In an ideal world then yeah. But what have you seen from this squad in the last 15 months that suggests we are remotely capable of playing that system?

Sad to say I have watched us play that system consistently through that period and it has worked on very, very few occasions. And when we haven't played that system by and large since mid-December, we've played better, scored more goals, won more games.

I haven't got a problem with us playing 3-4-3 if we've got the players to do it. We obviously don't. We don't have the players to play 4-3-3 either.

I don't see us relegated so I would hope when Wolves are relatively safe Paul Lambert will explore the option of a passing game through midfield. It would be a crime not to do so if we are to fully develop the likes of Ronan and Herc.

Unless we set up like we did at Anfield - which isn't sustainable in league games - then we cannot play 4-3-3. We tried it extensively through 2016 under three managers. It was dreadful. The defence doesn't get protected properly and we pose little to no goal threat.

We need a #10 in there to link play. Look at our results since we switched to 4-2-3-1 with Bright/Mason/Ronan in there. We moved away from that at the weekend for some reason and lost while barely having a shot.

Absolutely this. I'm not sure if it's a backroom thing or a culture issue but the chopping and changing of formations, Edwards at 10 and the propensity to play Billy Davies long ball needs to be ripped out of this club.

It really isn't difficult to play a good team from the players we have that can actually play football and not hammer the ball long to a 5'9" striker. It must be sheer idiocy to think this can work.

We need to play 4 2 3 1 . Bod has to start. It may be too early for Marshall. Counter attacking and solid lines in the wasy asgainst as team who are really good on the road. 1 1

Coady hasn't done anything to warrant getting dropped and Iorfa hasn't done anything to warrant getting his place back. I think PL may throw Marshall straight in at RB though.

I'd also like Hause and Stearman to retain their spots - Batth vs Gayle worries me greatly.

Evand and Saville did themselves no favours whatsoever on Saturday and Jack Price had his best game for weeks despite not playing.

Weimann was anonymous v Burton and a good performance from Ronan for the U23's tonight may swing it in his favour.

Saiss will probably start on the bench due to the Shelvey factor and the threat of him losing his head. This will also see a plethora of fans on twitter lambasting Lambert for not starting him. I'd be more inclined to ease him back in v Wigan.

Up front poses more questions than answers, I wonder if we could see Dicko in behind JDB, or even Weimann up top as the 9.

What I think we'll see:

Ikeme

Marshall Stearman Hause Doherty

Price Edwards

Costa Bright Weimann

Dicko

Again you're talking medium to long term there. If we play 4-3-3 on Saturday we'll lose.

We have found a formula that works and it isn't 4-3-3, some trial and error is fine seeing as the season is as good as dead but I would like to see us go out as best we can against a good side like Newcastle and try to win.

Experiments that have failed,

1) Edwards at no 10
2) Saville on the wing
3) Mason on the wing
4) Batth
5) Dicko up top when we are lumping balls

I could go on but as long as we don't repeat the same mistakes im more than happy.

Experiments I want to see,

1) Ronan at no 10
2) Herc - somewhere in the team
3) Price & Saiss in a 4-2-3-1
4) Ennis when fit
5) Marshall at RB

4 - 2 - 3 - 1 suits what we have at the moment

Would like to see Ronan in the 10 position for a full game just to really see what he can bring to the game

Hopefully Williamson has not played his only game for a few weeks as this game (& the Chelsea on the next Saturday) could do with his organisation.

Ref for Sat is Craig Pawson - don't think that I have heard bad or good things about him so hopefully fairly neutral.

Asst's/4th official Iain Hussin, Sian Massey-Ellis & Mark Heywood

Would love to have Williamson back hopefully he will come back in now.

Pawson ref'd our game at Anfield

4-2-3-1 is how we will set up. Also we will not play 3 'passers' as, since Lambert had come in, we have looked to play the ball forward quickly and hit teams with pace. Unfortunately that can be countered by the opposition sitting deep and protecting against quickly released balls into the channels, this is how Burton dealt with it and we degenerated into aimless hoofs.

When we've tried to play possession football we've looked very pedestrian this season, and certainly not good enough to play the ball through Newcastles defence.

I would start Bod as I think he will give the Newcastle defence more difficulties, Nouha's confidence is absolutely shot, and despite a few good runs off the ball he is offering little at the moment, certainly he's not getting into goal scoring positions.

Would also play Bod - he does seem to do 'something' with the ball after winning it other than just a shot

Just think that he gives the defense another problem to solve.

I felt sorry for Dicko on Saturday, having the ball humped at him, back to goal playing against a 6 ft 4 lump. That's a tactic I don't want to see again from Lambert and it was a deliberate tactic as we did it from the first minute.

Biggest problem is that we did it to the 94th minute as well

It wasn't working (though not sure why anyone would think that it would) - needed a change of strategy, though it didn't happen

Yes it was dreadful on Saturday, I'm not sure why Lambert even thought it would work tbh, and if it did have a chance of working then Dicko was not the type of forward to make it happen. I also felt sorry for Nouha, if that's the role he is asked to play he will never rediscover any form.

I think it was muddled thinking from the manager and he walked straight into a cliche. Tight ground, heavy pitch - although it really wasn't that bad, let's aim to get it forward quickly and play off the forward. It's a tactic that may have worked with Chris Martin up top, but not Nouha Dicko

JDB has been much more effective when coming off the bench. I'd persevere with Dicko - even Luis Suarez would have struggled with the service he got at Burton.

----------------Ikeme---------------

Marshall--Stearman--Hause--Doherty

-----------Evans---Edwards---------

Costa-----------Ronan------Weimann

--------------Bodvarsson------------

But suspect Batth for Hause, Coady at RB, Edwards and Price in the middle, and Bright at 10.
To be fair, Price, Evans and Saiss are all possibilities next to Edwards and I wouldn't complain at any of them.

Doing that tactic for the first half on that pitch was understandable

Doing it again in the second half wasn't
