Was just thinking in the 35 years I’ve been watching how would I rank all of our permanent managers in that period.

1. Nuno
2. Turner
3. MM
4. Jacket
5. Jones
6. Lee
7. Taylor
8. McGhee
9. Lambert
10.Hoddle
11.Solbakken
12. Zenga
13.Lage
14. Saunders

Might have missed someone, was a toss of a coin between Mick and Turner for second both did good jobs but both were kept on a bit to long.

I dream of having a manager who does such a good job he is poached by another team. Incredible that we have never had a manager good enough to be in demand by a bigger club since Stan Cullis.
There were no bigger clubs (in England anyway) when Stan Cullis was in charge.

We have never had a manager leave for another club at any time since the club was founded.

I would be surprised if we paid the compensation Sporting would want for Amorim but it is nice to be linked with an exciting, young manager.

I will admit that I was initially sceptical about Pedro Martins yesterday but this was based on about 1% knowledge of his managerial career :D Having actually read about him, I feel he would be a pretty good appointment. Seems to play good football and has had a degree of success every where that he has been. He was available in the summer though so it would make you wonder why we didn't just replace Lage with him then.

Martins looks like the safer, less sexy option compared to Amorim but I'd be pleased with either. Both are in a different league to Lage and look like better options than Lopetegui or AVB. Hopefully we are considering the Celtic manager too.

Zenga

Tbf although 1986 post was poorly worded, we all know what he meant surely, he was talking about Portuguese coaching rather than the nation as a whole imo. I know its a sweeping generalisation but the feeling is Portuguese coaches are quite defensive or maybe rather pragmatic. From the bits I've read, Amorim bucks this trend? Also he is quite inexperienced. For all that, he is the one that appeals to me most of the names put forward, but I don't watch loads of world football.

Hoddle and Solbakken wouldn't make my list and as much as I don't like Lage he would be above Lambert and Zenga.

Is it true Amorim has a Fabio-sized release clause?

1. Nuno

For all Lage's faults (there are plenty of them - I'm glad he's gone, he was not a success) there were at least some highlights. Old Trafford and the double over Villa last season. Those I've ranked below him really don't have many - if any at all - between them (a few great days under McGhee but should have been so much more). The fact that I really disliked all of those ranked 8th or below speaks volumes - we've had some really shit managers over the years.

I just can't accept that Lage was anywhere near as bad as Saunders (just an all round bad egg - a terrible coach, a shit of a human being) or Hoddle (utter twat - I don't think Lage had anywhere near the lack of respect for the club as he did).

Also - we've had some relative success over the past few years. It's somewhat refreshing to have a 'who was the least shit' conversations on TWF again.

Edit: thinking about this, I'm putting Lambert below Lage. For the same reasons as above - fuck all to look back on under Lambert, as opposed to 'nearly fuck all' under Lage.

My top 3
Nuno
Mick M
Turner

For us oldies surely McGarry has to feature, pretty successful although by all accounts a bit of a twat.

McGhee has the quarter final win at Leeds, which was tactically brilliant and was probably my favourite Wolves memory, up until the last 3 or 4 years anyway. Plus he was manager for Bull's last good season. Much as McGhee was a twat, we did play some exciting football under him, so i'd definitely have him over Lage and Lambert.

Lambert had the cup win at Anfield.

I'd actually forgotten about the win at Anfield! I'll put that down to age.

I've never found Lage as unlikeable as McGhee. His arrogance used to really piss me off - he used to write other teams' pre match pep talks for them. On the flip side, you're right about Leeds and of course he's the last Wolves manager to win at the Hawthorns.

Not changing my list again though. Because reasons.

Lage gets above these for me and fights Lambert for the spot above Walter.

Walter - A stupid not thought out last minute panic appointment
Solbakken - Unable to adapt to anything outside of his own ideas and lost the players very very early on
Saunders - Twat
Hoddle - Double Twat

He joins these in being so far adrift of those above him though, it makes listing them in number order pointless. Just ends up in a pile that classes them as shit and they can fight out between them which one is worst
