Man City 1-0 Wolves: Verdict Thread

VAR was meant to get rid of this sort of stuff. It hasn‘t. Get rid of it. Ref gave a penalty therefore it was a penalty…just like it had always been before. Refs used to be wrong. VAR can be wrong. Might as well just let the ref be wrong so we know exactly who to blame.

I don’t think VAR adds anything other than for TV viewers.

VAR can't be wrong. It's a video. The people employed to use it can't use it properly through either incompetence or being bent. Used properly VAR could be beneficial to the game.
Video Assistant Referee. The clue is in the name, it is a referee, not the video, that makes the decision.

Although the penalty decision was harsh, whats his fucking arms doing up in the air, it’s not a natural position and its obvious a ref is going to give that if it’s anywhere near his arm, as it’s not clear and obvious, how can VAR overturn.
Because he's coming from behind him and diving in, if he was already there and stood upright he would have his arms out of the way

Basically we’ve now got bad decisions on delay, the rule on clear and obvious error is so vague it creates huge blurred lines.
If you ask me it’s a cop out that gives the PGMOL a safety net and a loop hole if their officials make an error like today.
Whatever Mariner had given today they would back him up.
It allows an environment for inconsistency in decisions and sheer hypocrisy and frankly a false environment.
There’s also a huge amount of arrogance throughout the game that sweeps this under the carpet. PGMOL are faceless, unaccountable and view any complaints as bitterness, lack of knowledge and an attitude of “we’re always right end off discussion”
They also assume the average fan is stupid with no common sense and zero knowledge of the laws.
The media very much play to the tune of the big 6. They also have an attitude of we know better than the fans.
Only a very few have called out today’s decisions as appalling, the rest don’t care frankly because of who fell foul of it. If this happens in the Manchester derby we hear about well into next week.
We were told minimum interference when it was bought in. Ok that’s fine but be consistent, classic example of over interference was the Mahrez penalty at Molineux at Xmas 2019, less than 1 year later Traoare was booked for a similar incident.
If we’ve got VAR we want as close to the right call as possible, most fans will forgive 50/50 calls. But the officials are hiding behind the clear and obvious mantra currently.

If they could somehow make var team agnostic so team colours and faces were obfuscated that would help remove bias

On penalities it'd be good if the match ref just had a quick check on the monitor for everyone they gave. I don't think anyone would begrudge that extra bit of time to confirm they're happy with their decision.

One more time for the people in the back.

The problem is we need to score goals, so any mistakes from the officials doesn’t effect us, we are toothless, we blamed not having Raul, but he’s back and looks sharp, although anything from today is a bonus, Bruno needs to release the handbrake. At the moment we are going backwards 11 goals in 12 says all we need to know.

3 years in, people still say this, yet nothing changes. Without VAR today we lose to a dodgy penalty, with it we lose to institutional incompetence.

Saying the system is fine, it's the people operating it who are the issue, is irrelevant when the people don't change and there's no desire from those who can change that to do so. It's an abomination, the game is so much poorer because of it

They couldn't find a definitive angle Lineker said. Well you don't give the penalty then. Absolutely shocking, surely a corrupt decision in my eyes.

Was out all day so only seen the 'highlights' on motd.....think Keown and Shearer called it spot on. Obviously City deserved to win, although they didn't have loads of clear cut chances. Rauls first yellow is crap, those little tugs on the shoulder happen loads of times in a game, rarely given as foul never mind a yellow. Raul is properly out of order on the second. The penalty decision/var is a joke.
