Watched the first half, he's playing left side of a back 3. Easy to see why we let him go on loan: step for step, he's nearly an exact copy of Toti. Very communicative with his teammates, though, which I always like to see.

It's such a high risk strategy which relies on lonwijk getting it right and the linesman. It might work with VAR but not in L1. He's got to play the percentages and slow his man down rather than letting him sprint through unopposed on goal.

i'd argue trying to play offside in L1 (without VAR) when the margins are so tight is a very high risk strategy.

Even if Lonwijk gets it right, there's no guarantee the lino will.

That’s the same at any level (Sunday league to Championship?). You can’t just not play offside, an absolute massive part of the game, because the official might not do their job. If he steps up half a second earlier the guy is 5 yards offside and it’s an easy decision.

He just tracks it too far, thinks “oh shit what am I doing” and steps up. By then he is already too deep (3 yards deeper than NML) and the guy kicks it first time so ends up being a tight decision rather than a blatant one.
