Live Match Discussion 2018/19

Whilst Albion's ground is basically in Birmingham, their catchment area is effectively the parts of the Black Country that aren't Wolves.

If you grow up in somewhere like Wednesbury, Dudley or Tipton, you're either going to be Wolves or Albion. The average Wolves fan would be an Albion fan or vice versa if the other club didn't exist. You're right next to each other. That's why it's the closest rivalry.

Now, I'm quite rare in that I like to bring a bit of rational thinking into these things: Albion fans and Wolves fans have far more in common with each other than they will with fans of any other club in the country. So the "hatred" bit drives me mad. It's a complete nonsense.

It doesn’t drive me mad, but I agree with your last paragraph.

I don’t mind Albion as I tend to get on with the majority of their fans. I enjoy the pisstake though.

Everton v Liverpool is closer and bigger.

I would say Liverpool fans care more about the United fixtures (helps that Everton haven't won at Anfield for nearly 20 years, so they're never much more than a fly in the ointment most seasons).

As I said earlier, a very decent majority of us either have baggies as relatives, or work with baggies, or socialise with baggies outside football.

We are cut from the same cloth. That's the point I guess.

I always subscribed to the all blues fans are wankers opinion, but there's this really little old kind bloke at work, do anything for you. And he's a blues fan. It's messing with my whole world view.

I nearly picked Birmingham (and Albion, tbf) back in the day when I was first finding a club to support.

Basically I was choosing between Wolves, Brum, Albion, Sunderland, and Blackburn. Looked for a while like I'd made a pish decision! :icon_mrgreen:

At the time you created yourself one shitty lucky dip there!!

Supporting us is not supposed to be fun. We're the Schindler's List of football clubs.

There was a sense of reliability when we went shit for a couple of weeks in November. Then we fixed it. It's not normal.

That's definitely true. Might change though, my kids now expect us to be good and win.

They'll learn eventually.

My first season really paying attention (having set myself on being a Wolves' fan, I mean) was 2011/2012, so don't worry, I'm under no illusions that this is supposed to be enjoyable.

You're 4-4 on good/bad seasons. That's an incredibly fortunate ratio!

My first season was 98/99, Colin Lee, Robbie Keane etc... I've just reached the 20 year mark and the bad seasons outweigh the good but I think that is starting to change. This season and last have been the best in my time supporting Wolves. And I loved Micks reign.

The Villa rivalry has built from the beginning of last season really, Villa fans in particular haven’t come to terms well at all with the fact that they are about 3rd or 4th picking in the region.
They’ve developed the same attitude that some of our older fans had in the 90’s, ie I remember us being great and we shouldn’t be in this position.
As some have said football is wired especially in England, Wolves and Albion fans have a lot in common but it remains the biggest rivalry based on geographical principles.
Conversely Forrest and Notts County are separated by the width on the river Trent and have virtually zero animosity towards each other.
County hate Forest. Forest fans look on them like we do Walsall

Even moreso considering that when I picked Wolves it was under the pretense that we'd forever be a yo-yo club!

Absolutely. Forest hate Derby and Leicester. Although one of the joys of our league 1 season, even amongst the avalanche of points was the game at Walsall and the waaaahmbulance on radio WM after. Walsall only matter when they make us laugh.

I'm not a proper football fan cos I don't really hate any other teams, tbh I struggle to have enough interest in any other teams to generate any real dislike

The one Walsall fan literally crying about how much more impressive Walsall were than Wolves is, no joke, one of the funniest things I’ve ever heard on the radio. Might try and find the clip again for the laughs.

agree with much of this. similar ish sized club. similar fanbase. i don't get the antagonism either.
as deutsch mentioned, i also don't get the antagonism for villa. my grandad was, and my did is a villa fan. they're not the "wankers" some keep posting villa fans are. that "rivalry" is recent, and seems to be a combination of the clusterfuck of xia and bruce, a small minority of villa fans being arsey, and a small minority of wolves fans lording it based on our current success.
