Live Match Discussion 2018/19

Absolute horror again from Villa, and doing that against the Shit is particularly unfortunate.

By all accounts Hause was easily their best player.

Dean Smith must be on borrowed time already. I can't wait for the summer implosion as they surely have to sell all the family silver (snigger).

Annoying that the shit won, but everyone above them won so all is still well.

Smith will see out the season. They have a rebuild and a half to do on that squad and as FFP doesn't exist in that area of Birmingham they will be able to do it.

Why do we hate Albion so much? I mean, aside from the geographic rivalry bit.

Seems personal at times, a la our dislike of Bolton.

Seriously?????

Really????

They are our most hated enemy. It is as simple as that. Even though most of us probably work with Albion fans, or have Albion fans as relatives somewhere in a denuded part of the family tree.

We live cheek by jowl. You might as well ask why Tottenham hate Arsenal.

But how did we end up with them and not, say, Birmingham or Villa as the "big" one?

West Bromwich is nearer
West Bromwich isn't really in Birmingham, despite their phone number and postcode, there's a very definite divide between the Black Country and Birmingham, not the same thing
We've played them way more than Villa over the last 40-50 years
Wolves/Albion areas overlap way more than Wolves/Villa areas
Birmingham have always been a tinpot club, no-one gives a shit about them

Also football doesn't always make sense and things do sometimes change. 20 years ago, Leeds was a far bigger game for Man Utd than the Manchester derby. Not now obviously. Although Liverpool is still probably their biggest game.

Geographically the Hawthorns is closer to Villa Park than Molineux. However, they are our nearest geographically unless you count Walsall, which frankly nobody does.

Albion fans are VERY keen to say that Villa are their greatest rivals right at this moment, and we don't count. I seriously can't imagine why...

I started watching us in 1988. From then we played Villa twice in competitive games in 15 years, both in the League Cup. They were frequently in Europe, challenged for the title a couple of times, won two League Cups, got to an FA Cup final. They were so far off our radar that they weren't even worth considering for people of my age.

I don't have a visceral hatred of them now, I just hated their owner, CEO and manager last season, classless fucks that they were. I just find it amusing that their fans are being brought down a peg or two and the tame local media are slowly realising that they aren't the top dogs any more.

All of that.

It is ace to watch them discover their new place in affairs.

But I don't HATE them per se. I can remember years and years where we got on with Villa because of a mutual hatred of Albion and Blues.

Newport deservedly going in level at half time. In other non news John Harston is an absolutely terrible co-commentator.

As I'm much younger I've never considered Villa much of a rival. Barely played them and until very recently have been better than us for all my life. The Villa fans at school were ok and we shared a dislike of Birmingham and Albion.

West Bromwich is closer and I knew more people who supported Albion, including family. Most Albion fans I have known are alright though, but the fact we have only been in the same division 4 times since 2002 means we haven't played them much in my lifetime either so my dislike isn't massive.

Birmingham are the team I hate. Played them a lot in recent history and almost all the fans I have met are bells. Would be happy to see them liquidated.

When I first got interested in football at the age of about 8, I had to choose my team and obviously it was Wolves, probably just cos the nickname appealed to me. At my junior school in Dudley at that time it was pretty much 50/50 Wolves/Albion......there were 2 or 3 Villa but nobody talked to them

Hated Albion in the 90s
Hated Blues from 2010 onwards
Hate Villa now

Whilst Albion's ground is basically in Birmingham, their catchment area is effectively the parts of the Black Country that aren't Wolves.

If you grow up in somewhere like Wednesbury, Dudley or Tipton, you're either going to be Wolves or Albion. The average Wolves fan would be an Albion fan or vice versa if the other club didn't exist. You're right next to each other. That's why it's the closest rivalry.

Now, I'm quite rare in that I like to bring a bit of rational thinking into these things: Albion fans and Wolves fans have far more in common with each other than they will with fans of any other club in the country. So the "hatred" bit drives me mad. It's a complete nonsense.

The Villa rivalry has built from the beginning of last season really, Villa fans in particular haven’t come to terms well at all with the fact that they are about 3rd or 4th picking in the region.
They’ve developed the same attitude that some of our older fans had in the 90’s, ie I remember us being great and we shouldn’t be in this position.
As some have said football is wired especially in England, Wolves and Albion fans have a lot in common but it remains the biggest rivalry based on geographical principles.
Conversely Forrest and Notts County are separated by the width on the river Trent and have virtually zero animosity towards each other.

Never liked villa. Growing up in Stafford they were always the local glory hunting option. They deserve at least 10 years in the championship with occasionally excursions to L1.

Everton v Liverpool is closer and bigger.

Wolves v Albion and Blackburn v Burnley are the oldest football league rivalries in the world.
