Just an English Skrtel really. And he isn't good enough for where Liverpool want to be as their defensive record over the last three years proves.

We're hardly blessed with centre halves for England at the moment but Shawcross never enters my thoughts.

Ok, i think he is a great cb but maybe he lacks quality on the ball then..for me he is better than toure, sakho, demichelis, smalling, jones for example

Some of those are just back up players at their respective clubs though.

I don't think he's better than Smalling or Jones. He is what he is, a good leader and solid standard for a mid-table team. Put it this way, I don't think he's as good as Nastasic who got bombed out of City or Lovren who has flopped at Liverpool.

Shawcross is better than Lovren for me. Not a lot in it, but Shawcross just seems more solid.

Based on this season yes. But Lovren hardly looked shaky last year, he had a great season. The point is he has not been able to make the step up in everything playing for a big club involves and I don't think Shawcross would either, this is his level.

Why do you think one plays for Chelsea and one plays for Stoke? I'm not even a Cahill fan but he is miles better than Shawcross.

Jose Mourinho isn't in the habit of picking rubbish defenders every week. I don't mind Shawcross but he is nearer Christophe Berra than Gary Cahill.

Mertesacker is a brilliant reader of the game. Considering how slow he is, it's remarkable he isn't caught out more often. He's decent on the ball too.

Shawcross is a good quality centre half. Perfect for the level he is currently at.

You aren't putting any arguments forward for Shawcross! Stoke's defensive record has been appalling for 18 months by the way.

My argument for shawcross, he is not that slow..great header, always fit. Leader. When i see jones and smalling playing for united i just shake my head..and big per is slower than my fucking ants in the house..not that many good cb:s around these days

Smalling has been really good for United in the last month. Was poor for England in the week though. He's very hard to beat when he's on top form. He's very quick, strong and can play it out. I think he suffers from a lack of confidence at times and he's not the same playee then.

Mertesacker has over 100 caps for the World Cup holders. Shawcross isn't getting a sniff in the weakest period of English CB's I've seen.

All smalling does is holding people and get away with it because he is a man u player..should have had at least 2 pens against the last games..quick??? If shawcross played for another team im sure he would have had some caps already..remy scores, hazard assist
