LIVE! Match discussion 2014/15

Bit of a lull for 20 minutes in the first half but otherwise I thought we played some very good stuff. They were abysmal though.

Did the Russia game ever get going again? Only I have them in an acca.

It did start again but got abandoned after more trouble when Russia missed a penalty.

Wayne Rooney will soon break Sir Bobby Charlton's goals coring record, but back then, there were far fewer easy games against the lesser nations.

Did seem to score a fair few in massive routs

Goals are goals IMO. If it sounded earlier like I was questioning his greatness then I apologize, that wasn't my intent. Just figured he'd have scored more.

To fall back on a cliche, you can only play who's in front of you.

Gareth Bale has just scored a fantastic free kick, Wales lead 2-0.

Wales first team is very strong. A core of Williams, Ramsey, Allen and Bale is probably on a par with what England are throwing out. And the support cast aren't just making up the numbers, most playing for solid teams.

Their bench is pretty poor though.

Bobby Charlton scored an international goal against Cardiff?! How does that count?

Dunno, hadn't noticed that. Maybe it meant Wales? Makes you wonder how credible that is now

Wales coasting to a 3-0 lead now. Fair play to Coleman, who I don't rate, but he's found a system so far that is working well for them at the moment. Bale hasn't even played very well but has two goals, an assist and a player sent off because of him.

Turkey 1 up in Amsterdam. The Dutch look a bit lost without Robben running at people and Yilmaz is having a masterclass.

Word in American media is that Russia will be awarded a victory for yesterday's abandoned match in Montenegro.

Agreed, Robben is so important not just to the national tram but bayern as well..

Sneijder also drifting far too wide for my liking. They already have Depay and Narsingh on the pitch, they don't need more bodies out there, they need someone to link with Huntelaar. Instead they're just passing it sideways in front of the Turkish area before floating in a prayer.

Bas Dost comes on as I type. De Jong off. Risky move, but I like the idea of Dost and Huntelaar playing together.

Belgium 4-0 up on Cyprus after two goals in a minute from Fellaini and Hazard.

Lucky Netherlands, they've been well on top in the second half but took a deflection from a Sneijder shot to equalize.

.

And for the "there weren't many easy games back then" belief...I think it's harder to score in games now because teams set up to defend and Northern Ireland , Luxembourg and USA weren't exactly international heavyweights

We were atrocious from the 50s on until roughly 1994. As evidenced by the 8-0 & 8-1 scorelines you levied against us.

Northern Ireland were fairly decent around then, 1958 (and Wales as well) reached quarter finals of world cup, had likes of the Blanchflowers, Jennings, McParland, Dougan and in later years of course Best playing during Charlton's time.

Neymar is getting a right kicking off the Chileans but his theatrics and histrionics each time he goes down are one of the things I hate about him

Confident line up from Scotland, gone with 3 at the back so they can play 2 up top, only one of that back 3 is a centre half too. You'd expect to get away with that sort of thing against Gibraltar though.

Commentator just said that today would represent a great opportunity for Steven Fletcher for end his 6 year wait for a Scotland goal. Is that right?! Was he even playing for Scotland that long ago?
