The optimism about Starmer at the beginning of this thread was interesting to revisit.
He generally does well at PMQs but nobody cares. The Labour Party don’t seem to have been an effective opposition or particularly supportive of the government during the pandemic, whatever opinions they held have struggled to breakthrough. In some respects they have been hindered by headline grabbing government incompetence and successes.
On antisemitism, his most notable achievement seems to have been that he is not Jeremy Corbyn. He has been given a really easy ride on this issue.
In by elections and local government elections he has been hammered, even allowing for the pandemic bounce for incumbent governments, his is not an encouraging record so far.
His shadow cabinet have nothing to say. In the absence of policy, vision or even a vague outline of what they stand for they either offer criticism of the government or some meaningless soundbite about their values.
On the plus side, he’s not Boris Johnson. The Conservatives know this also and will get rid of Johnson when they see him as an electoral liability.
