That's my point, people don't tend to get so wound up by things they don't really come across. I can't imagine there are too many in the West Mids stressing about coastal erosion anymore than they care about kosher regulations.

McNicol gone. Hopefully his replacement will be democratically elected by the membership.

Labour's move to becoming totally unelectable is moving closer. What a sad state of affairs when neither party are palatable options pandering only to minority ideologies that aren't in the remotest relevant to a society that wants to move forward in a digital age.

Politics really is broken.

He was dismissed for speaking against the shadow cabinet position, that will be the “official version”. It is a fairly usual consequence of breaking from collective responsibility unless you are in Theresa May’s cabinet. Owen Smith knew exactly what he was doing and what the outcome would be. We are starting to see the drip, drip, drip tactics from Labour right to try and destabilise the leadership in parliament because they are no longer in control of the party.

It could be argued that Owen Smith was taking a principled stance...but it’s Owen Smith.

Diane Abbott also advocated a second vote. But she doesnt get sacked because?

Because she doesn't go out of her way to undermine the leadership behind the scenes. Smith does so he can't be surprised if he does it in public there are consequences.

Keir Starmer is no fan of Jeremy Corbyn but sticks to the party position (some would argue is responsible for shifting the party position).

When leaders are in control their party they draw the line where and when it suits them - Theresa May has no control over her cabinet so the only dismisals she has executed have been following external pressure.

It is as it has always been.

Also appears Abbott quickly changed her mind, something Owen Smith was unlikely to do.

He had no choice but to sack him. But right now I'd vote for Smith over JC purely down to brexit stances

Of course he had a choice. Only piss poor leaders and despots like Trump get rid of people with different opinions to their own.

It's a sign of a weak man and leader to only want to live in an echo chamber of his own opinions.

There's a difference between hearing smith's opinion, which I'm sure was valued, and Smith writing a contrary opinion for a national newspaper

Your looking for a collective voice at a time when your activists are knocking on peoples doors trying to gain their vote in the local elections. Smith was looking to create divisions again.

Exactly. As a shadow cabinet member he either accepts the collective responsibility that comes with it or he isn’t in the cabinet. This is how cabinets work and the absence of this in Theresa May’s cabinet is why there is so much division and contrary messages but May is not in a position where she can do anything about it.

Owen Smith’s actions are calculated to create division and the usual suspects have lined up behind him weeks before local elections. They are lining up to pounce on any perceived poor showing from Labour in the local elections...it isn’t even subtle but I guess your pre-conceived notions on Corbyn will shape opinion about this.

Personally I don’t believe referendums are a useful tool in a representative democracy and the EU referendum is proof of that. People like Owen Smith should be lobbying behind the scenes to gain support for his position to put pressure on the leadership to change (much as Starmer did). Running to the media suggests he doesn’t command sufficient support amongst MPs.

I don't think Smith's opinion is listened to. This current version of the Labour Party is as close to a cult as I've ever seen. A far left Stalinist party I hope never gets a sniff of government. There's a nasty, almost Bolshevik, element to it that is no different to Reece Mogg and his abhorrent views.
