Jeremy Corbyn

There was obviously an intrinsic link between Unions and the Labour Party for over a 100 years.

Absolutely. I am not denying that link was there. What I am saying is that individual union members could want to come under the umbrella of union protection without being part of the labour party. That is entirely plausible, and the opt-out covers that. I don't really see any great need to change it to an opt-in, other than a rather crass attempt by a Conservative government to damage a fairly major source of funding to their chief opposition.

What is so wrong with choice? Are the Labour Party and Unions so entrenched that they cannot see that some people don't want to vote or have their money going to a party they don't want to vote for, but they do want the protection a Union affords them as an employee?

Surely the Unions would be in favour of having more members rather than fulfilling political ideology?

In the end I went for Cooper as she appears to be the most likely to beat Corbyn

Weren't unions a result of political ideology?

Weren't unions a result of political ideology?

Doesn't really answer either of my questions. Regardless of the history behind the Unions, the work place is a very different animal than it was 100 years ago.

I wasn't attempting to answer the questions that's why. I was asking you one.

Just a couple of hours now until the new Labour leader is announced. If Jeremy Corbyn wins, it will be a very different Labour party from the one led by Messrs Blair, Brown and Miliband.

Why do you say that? It is a complete non-sequitur. What about say, the NUS? Every student in the country is a labour supporter are they?

Not just this but the union in my work place is non-party affiliated.

As far as I am concerned Unions are there to protect workers' rights.

Completely depends on the rep/s and their interpretation of worker's 'rights' after factoring in their massive personal biases.

A good thing from where I'm sitting.

76% turnout in the leadership election. I must admit to being surprised it was not a lot higher.

Well they are dragging this out...

Anyway a question for Labour supporters. Why do they have elections for the deputy leader? Would it not be better if the leader chose the person he/she wanted as their deputy?

Sky sources saying they understand that Jeremy Corbyn is the leader of the Labour Party.
