Jeremy Corbyn

Well i never received a ballot paper, so either, the rules have changed since Ed was elected, Uncle Len has voted for me, or Harriet has identified me as a fifth columnist.

Same here, although mine was my own fault for not giving them my new address until Monday of this week. If it arrives before midday I may still have the chance to spoil my paper if that is possible with on-line voting.

Why would you spoil it? Vote for the person who represents your views and see if they are elected

My wife knows a couple of people who tried to vote for Corbyn but were told they couldn't vote. Apparently one vote was refused as the persons father was a member of a union (can't remember which one). Bizarre.

If Corbyn wins then it looks like a large proportion of the parliamentary labour party may split away. If Corbyn doesn't win then there are going to be huge questions about a rigged ballot.

I think the party could have handled this better.

I think the party could have handled this better.

That applies to virtually everything Labour have done since about 2003. Other, ironically, than Brown's response to the global economic crash which gets ignored in the accepted narrative now.

It's been a disaster caused by labour MP's deciding to tap Jeremy on the head to give the left of the party a mouthpiece in a taken for granted Leadership election.

They deserve everything that's coming their way.

I was reading earlier this morning that some party members had not received a ballot paper. The Labour Party denied this, but clearly something has gone wrong. This whole campaign has not been managed well, and I think that whoever wins, there could be a SDP style breakaway.

Its admirable that Ed Milliband tried to make the process more democratic, you wouldn't see the Tories opening up the argument as such when choosing their leader.

The whole concept of one member one vote is refreshing and democratic, but the parliamentary party are being all Napoleon the Pig about it now they look like not getting the result they want.

I've just checked with my Shop Sterward and would appear it's my own fault, the Tories have brought in legislation where Union members now have to opt in to support the Labour party rather than opt out.

Shouldn't this be the other way around, thats nonsensical.

Union members also automatically pay a levy to the Labour Party out of their subs, they will soon have to opt in to that also.

Look at it this way - why should your membership of a Union be assumed to automatically make you a Labour party supporter? Opt in is, in my personal view, the absolutely correct way to go.

Thatcher changed it (I think it was Thatcher anyway) to try and curb Union power. However, when that change was made I am frankly AMAZED that the Unions didn't send forms out to all current members asking them to return the form signed as an opt in. That would seem to have been the logical thing to do at the time.

This one I feel slightly less concerned about being opt-in. If you are say a member of a Union but also a Conservative supporter, you could still pay your subs, but should opt out of the levy going to the Labour party. That seems fair enough. If you turn it to opt-in and the Unions don't react to get the majority of members to opt-in then the funding of the Labour party could take quite a hit, which seems rather unfair.

But my problem with the opt out option is that gives the impression that every trade union member is a Labour Party supporter. I am sure that many union members voted for other parties in past elections. I do find it a strange way to go about things.

The 'closed shop' was outlawed many years ago, if someone joins a Company now that has a trade union in operation they have to ask to join the union, surely anyone requesting to be a member of a trades union is a Labour supporter.

I read an article on the BBC website this morning and it had a picture of a scruffy note regarding who to contact if you were having problems with your ballot form. I contacted the guy, he sent it on to the relevant department and hey presto my login details to vote have arrived.

Although I'm not overly keen on any of the leadership candidates and the visions that they have put across in their campaigns my comment was tongue in cheek and I wouldn't be going to all the trouble of getting a vote only to waste it.
