Jeremy Corbyn

The only people who hold governments responsible for the amount they either do or do not deliver on their election promises are the electorate. At the ballot box. In the next election.

I sort of thought you would like that.

Always room for improvement.

Just out of interest THM - is it OK for politicians to break promises that were written on the side of a massive fucking bus?

Or is that different?

The bus is irrelevant. Most politicians say one thing and do another. I would like it to become a law that they can't do that.

Did you think it was correct of the government to use taxpayers money to print and distribute a leaflet to every house in the UK, only putting it's point across, (propaganda), in a democratic referendum?

Presumably if political commitments are made and then broken that would invalidate the mandate, right?

Not at the moment, but I would like to see a way of making sure election promises being kept.

Could you answer my question? Please.

While I didn't agree with the government spending all that money on their referendum leaflet, didn't it just say that the government believed we should vote to stay in the EU and then give their reasons why? It's hardly comparable to having a massive side of a bus suggesting we could give £350m a week to the NHS when this was never going to happen.

I think the government propaganda was at least equally as damaging, however using taxpayers money for the propaganda was very wrong in my opinion.I won't defend the bus or lies on any side, that is why I think knew ways to try to make political parties, keep their promises is worth exploring.

Imagine it if May came out on live TV and said I want to clear the national debt as the interest on it alone would free up £60Bn and I also want to cost public services to meet higher demand due to the population rising quite steeply, so as you want a free NHS, Education etc I'm going to tax you all £200 a month extra. All will then be great. Maybe she should eh ...

I agreed that I didn't think the government should have spent £9m or whatever it was on the leaflets but it was hardly filled with lies was it? IIRC it stated the governments position and why they thought we were better off in the EU. Did you think the government should have been impartial on the matter? They made their stance on the referendum known right from the beginning and were perfectly entitled to let the public know that they thought we'd be better off remaining in the EU.

There were many people in the goverment who did not want to stay in the EU.
It was propganda and I would hope you wouldn't try to defend it.
As it was a free vote, I'd just want the facts, not biased opinions. Was there anything that was seen as positive about leaving the EU in the leaflet?

Yet you defend the Leave campaign.

I didn't defend the bus, which was not paid for by taxpayers money. I have always said that politicians lie and I don't listen to what they say, but watch what they do. I never took any notice of the bus, but think the leaflet was wrong. One was paid for by taxpayers money.

This is all old ground and been done to death. What exactly are you trying to prove? Your idea of manifesto accountability by law is a plain silly and we already have a democracy that woks for laws through both houses (law lords too) so any barmy manifesto pledges would be thrown straight out anyway.

Trump has just had his hair singed by this too and his wall will flounder. There is no desire to have executive orders in the British system as that is the way to tyranny. I know it was just an idea but occasionally ideas are just plain bad.

As long as you accept their are lies on both sides and you are happy the way things are, I don't have a problem with that.

Why on earth would the leaflet have highlighted anything positive about leaving the EU? It was a leaflet by the government informing us that they believed we were better off staying in the EU along with their reasons why. It wasn't supposed to be an impartial leaflet or a guide to the referendum.

I agree that it was a waste of money but I'm not sure exactly what was so wrong about the content of it. The government made it clear from the start that they wanted us to stay in the EU.

The Government spending £9m (going off T-Dog's figures) is like me spending 30p in any case.
