January 2022 Transfer Thread

One thing I think the recruitment team has done well over the last few years is build a group of really good characters. Doesn't seem to be any obvious dickheads in the squad. Takes some doing when your talking about young lads who are millionaires.

If they play the c**t, we have two players on more than our highest earner, sat doing sod all, potentially disrupting the tight-knit squad we currently have. No ta.
Playing devils advocate then it’s about money and wages coming to Wolves now?
I do agree we are tight knit but it’s also a small squad . We have space for a couple of oven readies for competition if nothing else and to increase options

We have a fairly decent total wage bill now, but there would be wiggle room. However, we aren't going to be giving out £200k a week contracts any time soon.

No we won’t , in today’s market we won’t be getting many oven ready marquee signings it’s true. 😞

I'm not sure its a great shock that we aren't going to be paying Mo Salah and Paul Pogba level wages. We'd be unsustainable with that sort of thing. I'm not quite sure what sort of model you think we should be running?

We should definitely be recruiting some more, and the fact we almost certainly won't be today is a disappointment. However, to expect us to be in competition with Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea in terms of wages we can offer is for the birds, frankly.

We appear to be recruiting potential fill stop when, at the moment we need a bit more than that . Whoever suggested we would pay pogba wages? However there are plenty of 100k a week players that we could be looking at . We have chosen not too and will chose not to again in the summer . We are becoming a stepping stone club and it will get worse once Neves goes as he won’t be replaced and I don’t think we get another Moutinho in a hurry. It was fun while it lasted but we aren’t qualifying for Europe or winning anything anytime soon . And two years ago I thought we would be .

You have. You said we must go oven ready marquee signings.
To us 100k a week is a marquee signing
DVDB would have been as would Lingard Ramsay Alli Sanches Botman and 100k a week would have been enough for some of those probably.

Ah fine. That's where you are placing the goalposts.

Ramsay is on over £400k a week at Juventus. It sounds like Rangers are paying about five pence in the pound on that if that loan goes through.

So 2 years ago what did you think we’d be spending for example?

Whilst i agree we should and could be spending more, turning us into a team who
Regularly finishes in Europe (top 6 not conference league) or wins things regularly is a huge ask

7th is regularly attainable if we play it right. Anything above that requires getting above one of the Sky Six. Financially, that is a huge ask to do regularly. There may be the odd season where we do it, but it's a really tough ask.

Our budget compared to those teams is like comparing Walsall to ourselves.

You are equating ability to money and marque signings top players at to clubs already.

There's about 10 clubs in the world that do that and we aren't there and I doubt ever will be.

The aim should to be like Everton under Moyes, occasionally disrupt the money teams. Bit of luck and a big run of results seeing us threatening top 4/6

Yes. Comparing what squad players at United are on is pointless. Just by signing for the likes of United you get paid more than teams like ourselves.

Absolutely. Plus I wouldn't mind winning the conference league to get into the Europa League that way.

We could and probably should be buying players at 20 m in each window if we are backing Bruno . We have not done that in the last two . We are woefully short in midfield and we have let Traore go . We have signed a low risk potential to bridge that gap . Colour me meh at the strategy as I don’t think it will continue but time will tell.

Fair enough. I get that. I’m more frustrated with the lack of business in the summer than I am in January to be honest.

A lot of speculation about future windows. If we sell neves and replace him with talent rather than players at a capable level I will be extremely worried. However that’s not happened, and may not happen.

Previously mentioned I’m intrigued to
See how we finish the season and how we go about business in the summer. A very
Important summer IMO

We've hit a bit of a wall in terms of the profile of player we can get to improve the first team. That calibre of player will naturally want to sign for a bigger club than Wolves.

One way to get around that would be to pay over the odds in wages, but I'm glad we're not doing that. The approach of trying to pick up hot prospects we can flip later at a big profit is the best way to go about growing the club in the long term, imo, as long as the money from player sales is reinvested in the squad. When you see other clubs signing players, there doesn't seem to be much of an overarching long term strategy, whereas with Wolves there is. Whether you agree with the figures spent on certain players or whether they are any good, there's a strategy there.

It sounds counter intuitive, but the best chance of us kicking on as a club is probably by selling one of our best players for mega bucks and then spreading that money around to improve numerous positions within the squad.
