January 2022 Transfer Thread

I thought the signing was universally welcomed at the time, are we using the gift of hindsight

Yep. Then again most people were jizzing over Vallejo and Cutrone coming from European giants to little old Wolves, so maybe we all need a little more humility and a little less certainty about our judgements

Fabio and Semedo could've rocked up on free transfers and people would still be whinging if results weren't right

The weird thing is, our results are actually pretty good. People just want fancy football to go along with it, otherwise 'what was the point in getting rid of Nuno' (take a look at Spurs for your answer, the guy's a busted flush)

Some were happy, some said they'd not seen enough of him to comment. I was in the latter camp. I think it would be fair to say people exaggerated their levels of enthusiasm for him not being Doherty. The only time I could remember seeing him play was for Barcelona getting destroyed by Bayern, but accepted that wasn't likely to be representative. As it is he's a serviceable PL full back which we paid an elite price for.

I'm sure your opinion could/would've been swayed by the right performance though.
Of course, I'm wrong loads and freely admit it. It would need to be the performance of the player not the team as a whole though. If we'd finished 7th again last year it still would have been a hideous use of resources.

I think the exaggeration of the ability of players that some posters have barely seen, but are 100% committed to is definitely a thing. Trincao was another in the Summer, who may or may not come good, but was lorded as a masterstroke in recruitment by some who I bet had seen him play 2 or 3 times at the most.

I have no idea on any players outside of wolves, a little in the Premier league but my interest in football is restricted to wolves these days.

Every signing or rumour is a complete mystery to me and one of the reasons I come on here, not that half the time I'm any wiser after mind.

I always have humility as other than a passing, "that name rings a bell" my knowledge of anybody new is negligible at best :)

And if you extend it to 5 years our net spend is £37m per year and there's is £23m. I've got no problem with having a low net spend to be honest, if it's done properly it can be very effective. The bigger issue affecting the squad at the minute is what positions/players the money is being spent on.
Depends what you mean by "very effective" you're never going to do any better than mid table on minimal net spends. Competing to try and be in with a shout of Europe requires consistent investment on players.

Clubs just don't break into the next tier without spending barrrre green tho, fam. Trust.

Your both failing to take into account the fact we're going to sell Fabio in 3 years for £180m.

You mean £35m on the next generational talent isn't good enough for you?

Mate don't. I really like and/or pity the kid, but it seems like every weekend you see a 18-20 year old who really looks the part, and is miles closer to being prem ready in terms of technique and pace, and that fee just pisses me off more and more

Not so much centre forwards, I'd add as a caveat. Still exceedingly rare for them to properly break through at the top level in that position before they're 20. Calvert-Lewin scored one PL goal in his teens and only 10 when he was 20 and 21. Easier for say, a right back (just picked that example as England seem to have 10 billion of them right now).

That doesn't mean I think it was a particularly good idea and although he's not the hopeless duffer some have him pegged as, I'm not seeing *anything* so far that's a standout attribute, not even finishing - and pure poachers largely stopped being a thing in the Premier League 20+ years ago.

The first part of this post had me quite hopeful and then you just burst my bubble with the second paragraph.

Joe Gelhardt with his 2 appearances and 0 goals? Who is actually older than Fabio, marginally?

Not sure that's a great example.

More to Del's point, which I should've quoted, that there are players coming through who are more premier League ready and at the same age.

The only slight positive I can think of with Fabio is I think he's going to undergo a huge physical transformation in the next 2-3 years. I'm not basing this off anything scientific, other than just looking at him and his shoulders seem massively broad but his body is still quite child like.

I remember bumping into someone I was at school with who this happened to, it was just surreal, in the 2 years I'd not seem him he'd morphed into an unbelievable physical specimen by the age of 20-21. I can't really see Greenwoods body changing all that much to be honest, think he'll always be quite lithe and quick.
