January 2022 Transfer Thread

So how many of the games we've won lately should we have lost?
Southampton deserved a point. Brighton had the better of both possession and number of attempts but we kept them at arms length. We have the GK with the highest save percentage in the league and the leagues second best defence. That's why we have points. Not because we are free scoring and playing free flowing football. Its great we are on a good run , but this squad is still not a top six squad for me, particular in the attacking third. Sorry. It is currently overperforming in terms of points.

We battered Brighton second half. Hit the woodwork twice and butchered three one on ones. That should have been a far more convincing victory than it ended up being, 3-1 or 4-1 would have been about right.

Yeah, if that header had gone in rather than hitting the bar then I couldn't have complained too much at 2-2. Would just have been shit to throw it away from 2-0 up with just over five minutes to go.

All subjective, but I think we are 3 points lower than the performances:

Won Correct result Watford, Newcastle, Everton, West Ham, Brighton, Man Utd, Southampton, Brentford (-)
Lost Correct result Brentford, Palace, Man City (-)
Drew Correct result Leeds, Norwich, Burnley, Chelsea (-)
Drew should have won (-)
Drew should have lost (-)
Lost should have won Man Utd , Spurs (-6)
Lost should have drawn Leicester, Liverpool (-2)
Won should have drawn Southampton (a) (+2)
Won should have lost Villa (+3)

I'd probably have Spurs down as a draw. Not sure Lloris made a proper save in the second half.

I actually think we have over-performed if I am honest. But that's why I think the club should really be making the most of the position we are in and sort out some of the issues (we have created very little on a regular basis since the fourth game of the season) to help continue the results we have had otherwise I think we will revert to the mean. Defensively we have been strong but even in that area had some luck at times.

yep I see that. I just dont think that we score enough goals to be a top 6 side. 1-0 seems to be the most prevalent result and thats always too close for comfort. A mistake , a worldy , an og , a deflection and that changes things a lot from 1-0. JWP free kick is an example of where a second goal really helped. Its good to see us scoring more than one but we have failed to score in 10? games this season out of 21. That's not top 6 form even if your points suggest otherwise.

These games show why scoring has been our Achilles heel and until that gets sorted , we are where we are. I am not knocking it. I have enjoyed us more this year in many games. Like others , I would like to see some new blood to help us both consolidate the position we are in and build on for next season.

Table don't lie.

A lot can and will happen between now and May, I doubt Bruno is suddenly going to start trawling through training sessions not looking to improve the players from where they are now.

See the Brentford fixtures for evidence. Even comparing our team now to the one that started 3 games winless and goalless is almost apples and oranges at the end of January.

FWIW we have the biggest delta between expected points and actual points in the league.

From an xG perspective we should have conceded 8-10 goals more than we have.

Nah, they had way too many chances. We dropped lucky keeping it to one really, albeit the penalty was a joke. They'd have scored anyway at some point.
