January 2021 Transfer Window

Anyway, to answer your question, I feel like the recruitment that was done in the summer was for a formation that we aren't playing any more. Semedo & RAN look more like wing backs who would thrive in our old system, rather than full backs who would be comfortable in a back 4. Perhaps Marcal would be more suited to a 4, but he is injury prone. I'm not sure he would offer us much (if anything) in an attacking sense, either. Jonny could definitely play that role and I hope he returns ASAP.

***I agree with all of this. They were definitely signed for a 5, and I would have thought Semedo was that guy in the summer too. From what I’ve seen though I don’t think he is for reasons I’ve mentioned previously.

We don't seem to have a midfield two that can play together efficiently. The Donk debate has been done to death, but I don't think he is the box to box attacking midfielder we want.

*** I think we have a midfield two for 4-2-3-1 and 3-4-3. But when we play all 3 of them it’s a recipe for disaster (apart from low block counter with two world class forwards, neither of which we have now).

We need a signing in defence. An actual centre back who can play in a central back 2 pairing. I love Coady & Saiss to bits but I'm not totally convinced either are long term options in the centre of defence as a 2 - both have demonstrated on more than one occasion each that they have clangers in them. I know all footballers can have a 'moment', but we'd be a lot stronger actually signing someone who can play in that system comfortably. Jury is still out on Boly in a 2 as well.

***We definitely need better players moving forward, they aren’t good enough to be where we want to be. But they aren’t the issue at the moment for me.

Won’t let me bold so *** is my response

Full-back/wing-back looks one of our most solid areas to me, look to have a variety of skillsets there too. I'd love to see Hoever given a run at RB, although appreciate it may not be this season, and the priority for me is giving Semedo games to get some partnerships going.
Yeah, we have good options/depth there - but none of them actually appear to be perfect for the system Nuno is attempting to play! Hoever, if any, actually looks like he has the most potential (from the small snippets we've seen) to play in a back 4, but also to be able to switch to a back 5 when required.

I do agree, though, that we're likely to do nothing other than play Semedo through this poor run of games & form to try and get him used to the other lads and such.

Moving in to next season, I'd like to see us sign a top class CB. We could then line up something like Semedo-New CB-Boly-Jonny.

Coady/Saiss as back up is fine. Hoever to cover the RB spot and RAN to cover the left back spot. That was probably the intention this last summer, but we failed with the recruitment of a new CB. That or Nuno had no plans to switch from the back 3 at that time and was happy with Saiss, Coady, Boly, Kilman as his first choice options.

Villa are getting Sanson for £15m which is a bargain IMO.

It seems strange if we have actually held an interest previously, and there's a chance to get him below previous value. But then if we feel we need a different type of midfielder we may just not be interested anymore.

I don't think we ever did, just an odd link from ages ago.

There would be literally no point in us signing Sanson, he's way too similar to the players we already have in that position. We need something different

Villa are a much better prospect atm 😙

He isn't though. He's energetic trying to win the ball back but can pass, dribble and shoot.

In the games I've seen him he was and if he could do all of those things to a very high level he wouldn't be costing 15m and going to Villa.

There's some stuff on twitter about Cutrone going to Italy, probably nothing in it

Let’s hope so as that must mean a forward is incoming and practically anyone coming in is likely to be more use to us than the Pasta Man.

Odegaard is available on loan - do we think Real will still be pissed with us about Vallejo? :D
