Aren't they a legal requirement? So clubs just stick them at ridiculous prices to make them virtually unaffordable because they're obliged to include something.

The mechanism DW mentions is bizarre though, think buying clubs essentially pay the player so they have to money to then buyout their release clause. Would be ace for some mentalist to agree to a move then try to do a runner with the cash in the middle of the transfer.
