January 2020 transfer window

I just can’t see Olmo. Assuming the other two deals are done that would give us 7 forward players – Adama, Raul, Diogo, Neto, Podence, Oliveira and Olmo – for three positions. The only logic of that is that someone is going. If we’re spending that money, would much rather see it spent on a RCB, competition for Doc or bolstering the midfield

Unless we’re looking to convert Podence into a wing-back?

Olmo was said to be not interested in coming to England. And Tim reckoned we'd not bid for him.

Podence, Olmo and Traore all behind Jimenez would give me a major rager.

If are interested in him but don't get him, it will only be because his value is unreasonable. Fosun are shrewd and they certainly aren't skint.

We say that, but we are about to spend 30m on an unproven winger from the greek league. For me personally it makes a lot more sence to pay 60m for someone like zaha (not saying hell agree to come here just as comparison) who is a proven asset and is going to guarantee us 10 goals and 10 penalties a season.
Or overpay for someone like cavani who probably only has only one good season in them left, push for a champions league spot next year and attract a higher calibre players with that spot. You dont win anything without risks.

I think it's fairly clear we're not going to pay over-the-odds for current Premier League "stars". Zaha, for a start, would never come here in a million years. And, good - he'll want close to £200K a week - he's already on £150K.

Players like Cantwell, for example, will cost £20m plus and I'd say they're a much bigger risk than a 24 year old winger who regularly plays Champions League football for a massive club.

So, for me - at least in that respect - we've got it spot on.

I will never understand why fans fret about overspending. It's not our money!

The whole argument falls down on the fact that Palace have been seeking virtually £100m for Zahra.

This. Unless it's obviously reckless and putting the club in danger, which is clearly not the case here, what does it matter?

He's not unproven. Regular Champions League player and ripped Spurs a new one back in October. To the point their fans were saying sign him up.

And he's just over £20m, not £30m.

Joe from the Express and Star still reckons that we haven't bid for Olmo, and our focus is still on getting Podence and Oliveira over the line.

And if he was available for £60m there'd be a hell of a lot of interest from elsewhere. I imagine a team like Chelsea would jump at that. Arsenal probably would have before they went for Pepe. He'd probably have a team or two on the continent interested as well.

Did you not read the post by Alex Goncalves on Tugascout - someone posted a link to it. Really good article on Podence

Greek media reckons that Oliveira's told his sporting director that he actively wants to move to us, for what that's worth.

I agree on the risk element. I think the issue is more that available spending is not unlimited (even if it sometimes seems that way) and so we want to make what is available go as far as possible.
It's also easier for owners to back spending that appears good vfm

Podence being reported as €20m rising to €28 with clauses.

Sounds like a bargain to me.

For people more knowledgeable than me on these matters, what are the clauses likely to be? Are they related to success for Wolves - we'll give you €5m if we qualify for the CL - in which case they're more or less self-funding. Or are they related to things like appearances? He's played 10 games, here's another €500,000
