January 2020 transfer window

Without trying to sound like "the players coming back from injury are like new signings" - the bench looked a lot stronger on Thursday with Jota, Boly & MGW on there.

With them back fit, the whole squad looks stronger. I think the Podence signing will happen. Ideally we could get an out and out centre forward in as well, but those are difficult to come by in the summer let alone in January.

If Podence does sign, we will have a core squad of around 20 players, with promising youngsters supplementing that. Hardly the desperate situation people like to portray.

I think the major 'problem' with recruitment is that we have built such a good squad in a short period of time, that getting players of the level of Neves/Moutinho/Jimenez to compete with/replace/deputise them is difficult. Players of that level will look at it and think I'm not going there to be a sub and we aren't as attractive a proposition of the likes of Liverpool/City/United etc to have quality players waiting around for an opportunity. See the difficulty Spurs have in having a back-up for Kane, who literally breaks for 3 months every season.

Works both ways. The reason the bench has looked so desperately short of quality over the last month or so is because Boly, Jota & MGW were injured. They were always going to return at some point, but Nuno, Jeff & co have still all said we need players. What happens if the transfer window closes on Friday and on Saturday two of our starting 11 get crocked long term again? We go back to where we were.

If they've learnt anything, they will get 2-3 players in over the next week. If they don't, yes we're still in a better position with the injured players back, but it will still go down as a complete & utter failure of a window, despite how "difficult" it is.

Hopefully that's not the case.

Theres frustration (something I'm sure those working on new signings within the club feel far more than we do) and there's tweeting nonsensical, attention seeking bullshit whilst having a tantrum screaming "it's not fair".

I've no ounce of sympathy for anyone posting that shit.

Agreed.

I agree we need players. What we don't need though is players for players sake. If they aren't good enough to come into the side, then what's the point? And finding players of the quality of Boly & Jota is difficult, despite how easy some people seem to think it is.

I will be disappointed if we don't get 1 first team signing in this week, especially after letting Cutrone go. But I would much rather we didn't waste cash on getting players to just sit on a bench, and aren't good enough replacements for what we have.

When Vinagre is back we will have a pretty decent bench right now. Currently we are looking for backups or players to replace our first 11. Difficult to get players (we would want) for the former and very expensive to get players for the latter.

The strategy of promising young players, with the occasional proven player, is I think the best. But it’s not easy.

The same attention seekers crying out for signings will be the same ones who call out players for not walking into the side and being superstars the moment that they have an opportunity.

That’s the joy of a transfer window in these days of the ease of shouting on social media. Whatever happens by 11pm Friday, be it nothing or say six signings arriving with first team impact, some people will moan (probably different people in those two scenarios!). The point is that you can’t win as a club at the moment.

I think Podence will happen. I think Oliviera still has a good chance of happening. If they do I can GUARANTEE there will be social media whines of “where is the RWB, where is the centre back, where is the central midfielder, why not sign a proven centre forward who scores 20 a season and will sit on the bench happily”. It’s impossible to please some of these types. But they are empty vessels making the most noise.

Very few transfers tend to be done before the last few days of the January window. I’m not worried yet.

Ah, remember the goog old days when you needed a player and you just went and signed one....whatever part of the season you were in

I think the biggest PL transfer so far this window is Samatta to Villa at £10m, followed by the Minamino deal for Liverpool at just over seven million. Obviously, Gedson would eclipse those when made permanent, but that is summer business.

Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, it will hot up.

I wonder if we’d be interested in Berge if Kessie or Soumare weren’t interested. I guess around about now is when they all have to start making their minds up.

Vinagre is the new Emperors New Clothes.

He has gone backwards this season and, for most of the time, has been pretty awful.

There - I said it.

Vinagre hasn’t gone backwards but he’s had very limited opportunities and he’s trying too hard to do more in an attacking sense when he does play. He was excellent at Man City which is without doubt his best performance. I think his injury may give him time to think about his game and come back a better player.

Harsh. He has moved forward more than mgw but needs to realise step over don't count for fuck all if followed by no end product. I am not convinced he is a wing back. I see a frustrated left winger wanting to come out lol

He's only 19 so has time very much on his side but he hasnt been great in his limited appearances this season. When fit I don't think there was much pressure on Jonny's place in the team at all.

He was brilliant at City and Liverpool away...

There a bit of an unreasonable expectation for young players to be consistently good. Vinagre, MGW, Neto and others are still learning. Some players mature (and often fade) earlier than others. Nuno is doing great at helping them learn while developing.

I think people do get carried away too much when a player makes their debut at a very young age. Vinagre and MGW are both only 20 but it seems the majority mindset (not necessarily on here) is that they either have to be playing right now or we may as well let them go as they're not going to make it.

Meanwhile Tammy Abraham is 22 and this is the first season he has looked even vaguely ready for the PL. If you judged him on his Swansea performances and nothing else then he'd be one for the junk pile.

Look at Kilman, he’s 22 and only just playing his first professional games.

We're being linked with Armin Gigovic from Sweden. One for the U-23s...
