Is Bruno Lage A Good Manager Or Should He Go?

Back him or sack him?

I think he's probably not up to it either, but some of the stick he gets on here makes me think people have short memories about some of the shite/mediocrity we've had in the dugout over the years...

I think the contrast with his immediate predecessor (generally warm, charismatic and successful) hasn't helped him tbh

I love Nuno, but I think the 'bond with the fans' definitely had a significant boost by the fact he pissed the championship with probably the best team that's ever been in it. If he'd taken over and we'd just finished 15th in PL, I think the reverence would've been a bit less tbh. I'm probably wording it badly but I know what I'm trying to say, and certainly not trying to shorten the gap in connection between fans and both managers. Just that it's easier to build an amazing relationship when you're pissing the league

Funnily enough I said to my dad yesterday. It's nice that shit for this this iteration of Wolves means winning a game against a midtable team rather than bumming about in the lower end of the championship.

However I agree with Johnny here, that bond Nuno built had foundations of us actually performing on the pitch, without that it doesn't matter how charismatic he was.

I agree. Some of the comparisons to our previous managers are unfair, I think he's better than Solbakken (much better example than now of a coach who lost the dressing room) or Terry Connor.

The problems at the club began to emerge in lockdown and 20/21 was no different from last season really, Lage is just not the right man/not good enough to fix it. He wasn't properly backed to be able to fix that in his first season, but then I'd say Nuno was not in his final season either. At the same time, he didn't exactly show he was worth backing did he? The only system we were capable of playing was a more simplistic version of Nuno's tactics for the most part. The end of the season also offered no positives, he didn't try to change the style of play and we played like shit.

I'm in favour of him going but I'm not ardently anti-Lage, I have felt apathetic about his whole time at the club. Right now it feels like we are simply waiting for the club to get rid of the manager and try to bring in a better one like it was under Lambert.

Yep that's pretty much it for me.

I don't think he's someone who will evoke strong emotions during discussions in years to come, he just doesn't quite fit with what should be our ambitions now.

We have a very good PL base for a fairly newly promoted side, and with the recent investment, Bruno just doesn't match that. He'll have us finishing 12th-15th, which isn't acceptable if we want to keep and attract the Neves and Nunes of the world.

The fact it's not acceptable doesn't mean it's catastrophic though

Yeah, he'll be largely a fringe discussion subject in five years. Whereas we could all rattle on forever about Saunders and he was only here for four months (getting on for 10 years ago) because he was so incredibly awful and such a terrible person.

It'll go down as a waste of 18 months or so more than anything else, and he won't go on to "prove us wrong" anywhere else.

Every so often, when I'm feeling particularly masochistic, I'll watch the video of his unveiling press conference.

Fuck me.

looks like Rogers could be leaving sooner rather than later. are we brave enough to cut our losses with Bruno and appoint him, or perhaps give Villa the opportunity. I know he's not to everyone's choice, but for a couple of years I'd take him unless Poch was available

I'd take Rodgers in a heartbeat

Next manager to leave has to be nailed on Rodgers or Gerrard. Guess which two teams are playing each other next?

Dutching Gerrard and Rodgers on the next manager to leave market is basically free money at this point.

Be surprised if Rodgers is still there this time tomorrow. He's practically willing them to sack him. The only thing that could save him is the cost in doing so.

People blame Lage for an awful lot at the moment , in terms of our failure to create good solid chances and then to convert them .

I had another look , several times in fact , at Neto's miss in the first half on Saturday - no way can you blame Lage for that , that was just a terrible lack of awareness and composure from the player . A perfect ball played to his feet , perfect control , just get his head up and pick his spot . His insistence on keeping his head down is ruining his progression right now in terms of converting chances .

Ball wasn't perfect it was behind him. He never looked up once though when he got it which is why he inexplicably went near post when the keeper had given him 3/4 of the goal to aim at the other side.

We get into plenty of good positions around the box, but often it's the final pass or touch that lets us down.

Is our expected assists any higher?

Edit - I'll answer my own question, no. Only a tiny bit higher than the xG.

Interesting the excitement created by the possibility of Costa coming to play for us.
Wouldn't it be great if we could get the managerial equivalent of a Costa (type person) running the team?

Sure it would. I miss the days when a manager would tell the interviewer, " That referee today was really out of order! Blah Blah, Shouldn't be reffing at this level, blah blah", "The ref completely lost control of the game when he chose not to see... blah blah".
They're on big money, let them say what everyone else is saying (off camera). Pay the fine!
It's all gone mild, soft and bland....

It wouldn't, Jessie Marsch is the example for not having a fucking arsehole as a manager.
