Ipswich (H) 23/12 Build Up Thread

1972? We finished 9th, 11 points and massive goal difference behind the winners and it was two points for a win. We were even further behind in 1973 despite finishing 5th, 13 points plus goal difference.

I stand by what I've said previously (and albeit it's based on my own research and my second hand dealings with people who were around at the time), we were good but talk of us winning the league is way wide of the mark.

We needed a top keeper, a quality fullback, centre half and Knocker not defecting to Jehovah to be anywhere near of a sniff at the title IMHO.

The evidence would suggest that Wolves were a good Cup team in the 70's and very early 80's who on their day could beat anyone hence the finals and semi finals, but league wise were more than just a player or two short when looking at the respective end of season tables, which from 1970/1was:
4,9,5,12,12,20,1(div2),15,18,6,18,22

Was McGarry that good or did he just inherit a good young developing side from Ronnie Allen? Certainly Waggy thought it was the latter.

Possibly a bit of both, quality of the players Allen bought in/coached allied to McGarrys discipline

Wolves had an attack as good as anyone. The problem was conceding goals, which is why Parkes and McAlle needed replacing. Waggy and McGarry never got on, just as Munro and McGarry didn't. It was possibly one reason why Waggy and Frank became such good friends, off the pitch they battled against the regimental regime, but on the pitch gave their all.

And people saying it was because Knowles had retired need reminding that he retired in 1969.

Who filled the knowles void at the time? I have little knowledge so would appreciate the insight.

As regards Manager's then McGarry (in his first stint) was better than Mick (even I am not old enough to really remember the Cullis era) - Turner also possibly given where we had got to at that point.

Though Nuno's win percentage far exceeds anyone else for now - long may it continue

To be clear when I say this century I did just mean since 2000...

Although it was almost impossible to replace Knowles, after he retired Kenny Hibbitt played in the role that Knowles played. And while not blessed with the skills of Knowles, Hibbitt did a great job.

Mike O'Grady was signed as his replacement.

Cheers

Obviously a massive challenge as knowles (from what those that had the pleasure of watching him have said) was genius. How did O'Grady cope with that?

Thank you sir. Kenny Hibbitt was brilliant for us, so it just makes me wonder quite how special Knowles must have been when you say that. Hopefully we are heading toward having players of that standard again now.

O'Grady was a winger and would not have been bought specifically to replace Knowles. And he wasn't very good, only played about 25/30 games and never did himself justice.

By spending plenty of time in the boozer......could have been a good player

Quite simply, Knocker Knowles was the most talented player I have ever seen in a Wolves shirt. He had wonderful talent, and one wonders just how his career would have progressed. He would have been a certainty for England caps, and I dare say he may have moved on from Molineux to one of the bigger lights. But sadly we did not have the opportunity to see his career blossom and for his full potential to be revealed. Believe me he was a special talent.

Couple of questions, why did he go to America on loan and why hadn’t got an English cap if he was that good?

*Some rubbish about London players being favoured, even though analysis proves that to be untrue*

Tbf England didn't play as many games then as they do now.

Wasn't his USA stuff when we sent teams to play as LA Wolves and Kansas City outside our season or am I missing something else?

Yeah I know, but you would have thought he’d have had at least one cap at 23/24.

Colin Bell was about his era I think? Great player. You couldn't pick both.
