Good people of Britain...........PANIC

What are the pyramid things shown in picture 3? I don’t recall see them the last time I was there.

It's the Sea Life Centre

Just in Peasholm Park and the water is frozen solid 1000115897.jpg

Changed a bit, snowing quite heavily now!

Just got back to hotel, it was bloody freezing! Nice though

Not into astronomy at all but couldn’t help but stop for a moment and look at the amazing sky last night. The light projected onto the ground was surreal and a thing of beauty.

Was initially curious about the very bright star/planet close to the moon and with a bit of Googling worked out that was Venus, and the red one Mars. Shared that pic in a WhatsApp group and one guy into that sort of thing explained there was also Jupiter, Uranus, and even Saturn at 5 o’clock in the picture too!

It’s possible those others were only picked up by the camera and not necessarily visible with the naked eye, but even so 5 planets in one random phone pic on the walk to the pub is something I’m pretty chuffed with.

Going to be another very cold crystal clear night tonight and most of the Astro websites are saying Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and even Neptune should be visible, and not even requiring a telescope either. If stays clear where you are always worth a glance upwards and maybe even take a pic, you never know what might show up.

Won’t keep banging on about the night sky/astronomy thing but a bit more info if anyone’s interested.

Clear again last night but didn’t get outside til nearly midnight and missed the best of it, by which time the crescent moon was lower and whilst the sky full of stars there wasn’t the same glow on the ground and the planets not so visible.

Wanted to mention a fantastic app I downloaded in readiness, ‘Star Walk 2’, where you can simply point your phone at the sky and it identifies everything in real time. As you move it across the sky the screen bursts into life and the amount of information quite staggering. It felt very eerie and at times almost a little overwhelming.

I get people are into very different things and there are quite a few similar apps, but thought it worth mentioning as it’s great if only for a bit of fun on a clear night, but what a brilliantly simple way to engage kids/grandkids in something so educational and positive too.

Will finish off with a couple of pics, the first a standard phone pic of the night sky, then a screenshot of exactly the same area viewed through the app. Most people know Orion which can be seen on the far left of the first pic, but thought Taurus to its right was pretty cool especially showing a couple of planets too. You can get into adjusting the contrast to identify more, or tone it down to mirror exactly what the naked eye can see and of course lots of other stuff, but anyway, if you fancy it take a look but I’ll leave it at that for now.

I use a stellarium app which looks/sounds quite similar.

I started going walking at night as we were coming out the pandemic. There are a lot of fears about the risks of night walking (in my experience, most people I see are dog walkers). Have to say, in 2-3 years, have had no issues, and have found it very liberating to be able to go walking at night time/in the dark.

Yes there are great opportunities to look up and see stuff. Equally, a great opportunity to clear the mind somewhat.

Also, fabulous opportunity to listen to music.

I think my fear isn't of others during night walking, but appearing on the local Facebook group as a ring doorbell screen-grab, asking what this hooded bearded fella is doing wandering about at 3am in the morning

I've done some night walking before too. I have a local park right next to me but generally avoid that after dark and stick to main roads.

It's fine as long as you understand where to avoid and keep your eyes open.

That's fair.
Although I live in Birmingham, and tbh can understand why many feel somewhat apprehensive about venturing out when it is dark.
read earlier about a pub in kingswinford that arranged group alks that seems very well attended.
