General Wolves News

I don't think Sterling is very likely to score from there at all, and Foden isn't likely to score from the cut back if we actually have a keeper in goal. Poor decision.

Yes I’ve watched it back and edited. Thought he was clean through on the angle from memory. But Coady is probably there on the cover

That's not a position where he needs to be rushing out.

I can forgive him the odd one here and there though, every keeper makes a rick.

Nah. Classic keeper move in that situation. He is trying to rush Sterling into a shot or panic himwhen he looks up and the keeper is on him. Sterling was on it though and played the simple ball and mugged him off. See the position of the defence, they are expecting that move from him

I was surprised when he rushed out but you're right it is natural instinct. I bet he stays and guards his near post next time.

Everytime we have played City and Sterling has been in that kind of situation he has gone to the line or shot. Thats why he is coming out as Coads won't get near him. It just looks shit when it doesn't come off as they socre with ease. He has a plan, just didn't work out...not helped by us leaving Foden with the freedom of the penalty area

I'm all for him being proactive, he's very good at it normally. That isn't the right situation though. He's never going to get there in time to impact on Sterling, if anything he's making a finish easier let alone the cutback.

We've got Jesus and Foden reasonably covered there as it stands. I don't think a ball back results in a goal if Rui's in nets, unless it's a fantastic finish or they get a fluke deflection.

Its not so much about being on top of him just doing enough to take his eye off the ball and rush his decision. Sterling played the situation perfectly though and he looked for Foden before he got to the ball and I don't think at any point did we have a player close to him. It wasn't great from Rui but he willl do that more than stay on his line. He takes part of the blame because they scored, but it isn't all on him

Oh no, part of it is Adama passing to no-one, as he kept doing for the entire first half. He was shocking, would 100% have been hooked if we had a proper replacement on the bench.

Rui's been great. Although does feel weird that he's getting bigged up right after we conceded a goal the other night and it was absolutely his fault. We normally say those players "need upgrading" round these parts when that happens :D

:icon_lol:
I think I was trying to explain it has taken me longer than it should have done to appreciate how good he is, and has been.
Part of the difficulty is the sheer volume of games I've walked away from in awe of how good Moutinho has played.
Looking back since we've signed Rui, I'm struggling to recall an occasion where he's had a poor game. The occasional decision (as discussed above), but never a poor game.
And the fact he's got better too.
I knew he was Portugal's GK when we signed him, but little more than that. I guess I have realised how ignorant I was.

This was the biggest for me. To be fair, Adama wasn't the only one who did this v City. Boly was culpable of this a few times too.

That second goal could have been avoided if Coady had held his run back towards goal by a split-second more. Sterling would have been offside and the goal disallowed.

I hate to labour the point, but if we had had a LWB who wasn't ambling back from an attack looking completely lost then Boly might have had an idea which man to try and mark and tackle.

Rui came out to block any shot from Sterling who had progressed down an empty channel, but he cleverly passed it back to Foden who scored.

So while I agree Rui's action didn't look good, if he hadn't gone towards Sterling then he would have had a better angle to shoot, and he's not known for his assists. That one equals his total for last season.

He’s normally very much glued to his line when maybe the better option would be rushing. So strange that he took this decision this time.

The only thing i would say is a weakness his his sweeping up balls over the top when he tends to back himself to stop a shot rather than potentially giving them an easier chance if he misjudges it.

But there a few times (when we went to games) that you see Boly or Saiss hoping he’s going to come and deal with the situation but sometimes does it or decides to do it very late.

Every other part of his game is near faultless (bar distribution, but this isn’t that important in the way we play).

Really? One if Rui's main strengths is how quick he moves off his line to shut attacks down. He stops so many shots or situations turning into scoring chances with that (not just 1 on 1's)

I don't think you can really blame Coads there. He can't push out.

Adama has fucked it really by chucking away possession and then not getting back. Rui compounds it with a bad (albeit split-second) call.

Doesn't help that KdB is a ridiculous footballer, genuinely one of the best I've ever seen. Better than peak Scholes/Modric for me.

I will say when the ball drops between him and his own defenders he will tell them to clear if he thinks him coming out will cause an issue. A fair few times he has bollocked whichever defender has ignored him and tried to protect the ball for him to collect.

Yeah this is what I’m on about. Not shooting chances, as you say he’s very good and agile at getting out to narrow the angle quickly. I’m referring to ones like Jota against Ederson last year. There’s no way he comes for that (and in this instance the right decision) but there are plenty of time’s when there’s a ball over the top which I can see from row P of the NB that it’s coming through into the area so he could be rushing out to gather it (or put it in stands) but instead staying on his line so the attackers maintain possession and shoot / potentially work a shooting opportunity, which he saves.

Boly was too indecisive on it, as well. Looking at the pics, I don't think Rui can be blamed for expecting Vinagre to track Foden, which he didn't.

Don't really disagree that Rui should have stayed on his line, but understand why he thought he could come out to challenge Sterling.

That isn't a particularly easy finish for Foden if there's actually a keeper in goal.

Vinagre does track him, just not particularly well. Not tracking him would have him ambling away 20 yards up the field, Doc style.

Bad tracking or no tracking ends up just the same tbf.

From a work ethic point of view, they aren't the same thing :)

Debatable if he's actually his man anyway. Not like Foden was playing right wing. You could point the finger at Neto equally.

He watches him but doesn't realise the danger until too late.
