General Wolves News

I've got to hold my hands up, he's surprised and impressed me tonight. I know it seems a bit shallow but having him explain the thought process behind some of the moves has been really insightful
Absolutely this. I was entirely unimpressed by the appointment and the season start, but I'm starting to become quite the fanboi. Not to agree with that Jez twat, but I'm also slightly surprised and impressed that the players are able to implement the intricacies of a fairly complex game plan that changes with every opponent. I admit I didn't really appreciate (or even consider, if I'm honest) the level of detail that has to go into the prep. (I'd be interested to know why @GoldFlagFlyingHigh dropped the laughter bomb on your post. Does he write O'Neil's scripts? 😂)

You only need to look at the amount of info a player coming onto most games as a sub is being shown, to see the amount of tactical and thinking that goes into games.

That Mel guys tweets would make a brilliant parody account, if only it wasnt tragic someone thinks like that.

There was a Hidetoshi Nakata interview years back where he said he hated playing professional football because literally every aspect of the game was mapped out in advance. Reckoned he could have played blindfolded they were given such rigid instruction.

I wonder if sometimes there's too much information in such a short space of time.

You assume the players know the plan from the start. Some tweaks but the amount of information looks rushed.

It depends how you prepare the players to gel with one another for their match.
They are probably just reminding the player coming on what they want from them.

Wolves have just put out a video of the U21s pre match tactics talk. It was a lot of info. Down to what they wanted them to do on the first 2 goal kicks, where players should run depending on who they were being marked by etc. Some of the young lads looked bored!

They probably were bored.

But being bored/not being bored is the difference between James Milner and Gary Neville having immense careers and Lee Sharpe and David Bentley fizzling out before they were 30.

Doesn't really work like that, the human mind only absorbs so much in a short space of time. Too much is a waste.

There a really good chapter in 'Golf is not a game of perfect' (Bob Rotella) on it where information overload diminishes performance.

Oh definitely. I think it was Paddy Power who made a gag about that once on one of their accounts. Some City player was coming on with about 10 minutes left and they were about 5 up, and he was being shown pages and pages of what looked like set piece marking.

Slight sideways step, but that remark is soooo true!
I was caddying for a Director of a company one Friday afternoon and I watched him doing stiff little practice swings, shuffling his feet, adjusting his grip on the club, doing more expansive practice strokes until this was going on for several minutes, when I said, "Are you going to hit the fucking thing Frank?"
"I'm trying, I'm trying! I've watched so many videos, had so many lessons I can hardly remember how to stand straight!"
He played the shot and lost his ball wide right.

Madeley going full on triumphal mode on GON after his MNF display (you'd think we actually got PL points for him appearing), decrying earlier criticism of his appointment as 'lazy'.

While there may be an element of truth to that, for PTS to be bandying around the 'lazy' tag is more than a bit rich FFS...

Madeley needs to be fucked off into the sun.

PTS has certainly increased his output this season. Either his bosses have got wise to his minimum effort work ethic or they did genuinely ask him to do a few things inbetween holidays and now are looking to increase the stuff on Wolves.

His piece on GO is ok, a little bit "we get to see this side of him every week and you don't, so you know fuck all" in places but does then counter himself with a "he hasn't done anything ground breaking, its just what happens every day at every club (bar Birmingham*) but nice to see such detail given to the fans"

*Fearless football needs no details

Bit of a bonus for me, train and tube for Brentford would have been next to nil. As its the 27th transport around London will be ok.
