General Wolves News

Probably. I wouldn't pretend it's an outrage though as last time I checked the Premier League don't phone me up to check if I'm free on their new date.

It's worse with Madeley because it's his fucking job. I don't get to sack off projects that need completing by Monday because I'm going to my Dad's for Sunday lunch. Sorry but I told him weeks ago I'd be round, I'm sure you understand.

Plus the whole pretence that Christmas Eve is special, no it isn't.
It isn’t to you but to many it isn’t just another day.

There's just no way it's a cultural day of significance in the UK (not to say that individuals might treat it differently but that's up to them and not the norm), if it falls Monday to Friday and you work in an office then pretty much you'll be going in on Christmas Eve (probably not doing much but it isn't a holiday or sacrosanct in any way).

It isn't. Christmas Day and Boxing Day are but not Christmas Eve. When I worked at the NHS it was a regular work day. No early finish. Worked in retail before that and I basically finished when the last customer fucked off.

Xmas eve is better than xmas day for me, always has been, the fact I now have a three year old makes it extra special. So I won’t be watching the game, my choice. No issues.

I've always booked Xmas Eve off at least, I hate working over Xmas. Mainly it was for piss ups (bring on a home game by all means) but then for enjoying with the kids and cooking loads of food. This year we'll be in Rickmansworth for a full on family Xmas so the Chelsea game can get fucked. I'll happily watch it on the TV though.

Well last time Christmas Eve fell on a Sunday the PL league didn’t play that weekend at all. But with the introduction of the winter break we’ve lost a weekend and therefore the league pretty much has to schedule a game for the weekend of Christmas Eve. So that’s why it’s never happened before I guess.

Wife isn’t best pleased… and has given me the passive aggressive “you do what you want to do” vibe. Probably won’t be going…(but then will just be sat watching it on TV at home anyway…)

If you live locally all fine but chuck in the travel time and that is an issue

Games do move and cause issues all year round and its a bugger, most people will have had the choice at some point of go to the game or do the thing they planned before they knew the game moved...still gonna have a bitch about it though aren't they.

. I can see why people will be extra fuming at this one mainly because of the incoming grief on the family events side of things.

The moaning will of course be balanced out by the things were better in the past "shut up moaning we used to have to attend a game on Christmas Day and then Boxing Day, don't know you are born you lot" (generally said by someone born in 1972 though)
Even I cannot remember Christmas Day / Boxing Day double headers!

In 1986/87 we played on the 26th and 27th of December, Hereford away, and then Exeter at home.

The first 2 games I ever attended, you can't get much worse than a 2-0 defeat to Hereford as your first.

That must be the last time we played on consecutive days?

Yep, another 1972 baby and can't remember that. We did play back to back games on the 26th and 27th in 93 or thereabouts, Tranmere away and Oxford at home from memory, although very likely to be wrong

No you're right, 93/94.

1-1 and then 2-1.

We have family stuff planned as I normally work it and didn’t need to with this year being a Sunday.
I also got the “you’ll do what you want to do” remark but there was no need to reply. My lad just smiled and winked at me but made sure his Mum didn’t see! He’s learning.

1965 when the last game of football was played in England on Christmas Day. 1976 in Scotland IIRC.

My 72 comment wasn't to say that's when it happened just that the majority of times people go on about the good old days they weren't actually around then.

The main reason for the scrapping of the Christmas Day fixture in England was the fall in matchday attendances. The boomers preferred playing indoors with their toys than standing in the cold.

I don’t see it as a kick in the teeth for stadium staff at all by the way. Can actually enjoy Christmas Day without having to drag their arses to Molineux to work the Boxing Day fixture.

Unless it was a weekend I worked Christmas Eve for most of my career. It’s just a normal day with hopefully an early finish to get a pint or two on the way home.

I personally don’t have a problem with game on this day, doesn’t affect me massively and usually I have a lot to do xmas eve I’ll just shift things around.
I’ll get a roll of the eyes from the mrs when I tell her.
Traditionally @Deutsch Wolf is right it’s not a significant day, nevertheless it’s a day where a lot of people travel for their xmas celebrations, might be one of the few free days they’ve got to get stuff done etc. Plus a lot of families use it as a day to see each other especially if you have in laws etc and need to spread things around.
Us as the home side I don’t see it as huge problem, example being of got a bit to do Saturday before heading off to the game at about 3pm. Chelsea fans I can see the issue probably about a 9am start and getting back at 6pm if they’re lucky.

There are planned essential engineering works and upgrades taking place as Network Rail works to improve the railway, so we suggest you plan your journeys over the Christmas and New Year holiday in advance.
Some train services are affected and there will be disruption on many routes between Christmas Eve (Sunday 24 December 2023) and Tuesday 2 January 2024 inclusive.
Some train companies will be making changes to their timetable, and to some train times, to match services to the number of customers travelling.
There is also the possibility of short notice disruption due to industrial action.
