That first half performance was probably one of the worst I've seen, high when he should be low, low when he should be high, tucked in when he should be offering width, outside for the balls to be played inside him when he should be tucked. Saka took him apart. Gets a pass because he's not a LB, but it was cover your eyes stuff

Probably his best 2 games last season were as captain, let's hope it wasn't just a coincidence and the armband has magical powers which stops him being sucked up the pitch and allowing simple balls to be knocked over the top of him.

We do need more chants for players though, can't just be signing Oooh Fábio Silva 20 times a game.

He's honestly one of the least inspiring leaders I've ever seen on a football pitch.

Ignoring how we rate the player, and putting the transfer stuff aside (not on him) he really does feel like a weird choice for captain. Batth feels like he was more suitable in his era. Trying to think of a more recent "meh" choice?

I think at least if his play improves from last season, him being a captain will also start fitting better.

Someone posted something yesterday that mentioned Lemina and Sarabia along with Max as part of the new "leadership group". So at least theoretically Max has good support from Mario and Pablo in place if/when he needs it.

That's not to say that it's guaranteed that his captaincy works out.

I just think he's a bit meh. He's a little slow and I've not really seen him influence a game yet.
