General Wolves News

Was it talkingwolves who said we signed Sasa knowing he had a partial ACL tear?

(I know this turned out to be bollocks, just trying to understand if they've spouted untrue stuff before)
Yes, it wasn't a Twitter rumour it came from someone on their pod. I don't listen to it so couldn't tell you if it was the same guy or not.

As for Sellars, he was over promoted, he was Jeff's shield, a large percentage of his role was phantom because Mendes isn't allowed to do it officially. The fans did target the wrong person in the Leicester game, but as far as we know he was responsible for both the Coady and Adama deals, both of which are sackable offences on the grounds of gross negligence

If he wasn't responsible for the Traore deal he gave it a hell of a big defence considering he wanted out (allegedly)

I know it's not particularly helpful to prejudge Hobbs, but it does have a whiff of replacing one overpromoted patsy with another. What's wrong with actually going to market for a sporting director with actual experience and pedigree?

Depends if it's just a ceremonial thing as if the person in that position doesn't really have any influence then any Sporting Director worth their salt wont come and I reckon there is a good chance that's the case when you consider Mendes' influence plus Garagarza working on recruitment too.

Indeed, Garagarza isn't here to prepare the Tapas in the canteen

Hobbs' background looks pretty interesting and he's quite highly rated, seems a good fit for the sporting side. We do still lack a replacement for Dalrymple - the club should realise that a sporting director should be nowhere near contractual and commercial matters,

I think there might be a bit more of a demarcation between football & recruitment / academy. Hobbs concentrating on the academy and the actual process of recruiting players with JL focusing on the football (tactics, style etc). Player identification will cross both areas.

This as opposed to having tactics & style dictated by Scotty.

It does seem odd. Why not make Garagaza Sporting Director and Hobbs Academy Director.

The waffle about organising a gym and medical advice when Hobbs knows bugger all (by his own admission) about it seems a weird thing to do.

Get somebody experienced in to do that and call them Football Operations Director if you like. But get somebody competent not an academy scout.

It's just piss poor management from Shi.

There's a world of difference between player ID of first team and academy talent.

First team scouts and analysis don't look at youth football as it's almost a completely different knowledge base.

I presume the head of scouting (Ben somethingorother) will have this experience and knowledge base.

Garagarza is the de facto sporting director. It’s hardly brain science

So then what's the point in promoting Hobbs? He has no background in coaching, football operations, or sports science. If Gargarza, Lopetegui Junior and Mendes are doing the signings, scouting and analysis between them independently of Hobbs, and he can't do the football ops stuff because he hasn't got the knowledge and experience, then isn't he just a jumped up academy scout? I'm not blaming him, if I was offered the job I'd take it too. Find the odd £2m punt but keep out of all the big decisions? Happy days!

"They came in with a list of players they think can help us" is an important, and positive nugget of info!

Because they just need a name on the management structure to cover what Mendes does, no-one reputable wants that role.

Unless they fall out with Mendes then this doesn't change, but falling out with Mendes probably means they pull out of football all together.

Hobbs was Ben Wrigglesworth’s (the now chief scout) boss.

Had a look at Wrigglesworth's profile.

Seems he's an analyst. A pure numbers guy. Not somebody I'd want as Chief Scout but I guess Garagaza will be the guy who makes the decisions on players.

Yeah he is. He was the guy who first identified Kante for Leicester.

Listening to a webinar with him a couple of years ago - the numbers are the start point and then they can watch them, get references etc. He is then often the guy who then presents to the players when they are trying to sign them.
