..and yet Maguire continues to steal an England career.

So sick of Southgate.
Maguire had a fantastic Euros, and Southgate tends to stick by his players, which is something that has lead to us having the best team spirit in memory.

I'm no fan of Southgate but you can't deny he's the closest to winning a championship since Alf Ramsey.
You're not wrong, but he just doesn't do it for me. I've never been so disinterested in watching the national side and I'd rather crash out in the quarters than squeak a win in a major tournament with a series of dour 1-0 and penalty shootout wins. I understand that this is a divisive viewpoint, but I just don't enjoy watching that kind of football. I'd also point out that at this point in time, Southgate has won as many trophies as Hoddle and McLaren did.

The decision to not call up Kilman is very similar to the year Southgate spent not calling up Coady when he was in terrific form. Maguire has been absolute dogshite for most of this season and does not deserve an England place. If Maguire was playing for us, there's no way he goes to the World Cup.

You'd rather not win a tournament?

That seems daft to me

On a personal level, I'd take no pleasure in it. I don't like the apathy I feel from Southgate's football and it would totally take the shine off of any win.

It's not really that surprising that Kilman hasn't been called up, it's the first time in his career he's had an extended run of games at a decent level. He'll be on the radar, and if he keeps his consistency up then he'll get in soon enough.

I might be mis remembering but Maguire tends to be better for England than he is at man U

Portugal are pretty tough to to watch atm, especially given the talent they have at their disposal.

England scored more than anyone during the 2022 qualifiers, the boring bastards. Score some more!

I was definitely more disinterested under Steve McClaren as we were awful to watch and not even successful. With ridiculous resources.

The fact that you guys didn't win anything with that group of players in the early-mid 2000s just speaks to how brutal UEFA is as a region.

Not really, 2002 we weren't ready, 2004 we probably would have won it if Rooney didn't get injured, in 2006 Sven was demob happy (our own fault for allowing/engineering that situation).

McClaren is just a shit manager hence not having us even qualify for 2008, it wasn't a difficult task, he just messed it up (we didn't beat Macedonia at home or Israel away, and lost twice to Croatia).

UEFA's system essentially ushers any big nation towards tournaments, you have to be fairly spectacularly bad to miss out. As Netherlands have been regularly of late and I suspect Fernando Santos will somehow manage this year.

Southgate has had an elite squad, favourable draws (plus home tournament) and we’ve actually won shootouts this time. Think that’s what seperates him from his predecessors. He’s obviously a very good man manager which is probably the most required asset when you don’t really get chance to coach, but I think he’s negative which is what is letting us down In the big games we’ve had.

Obviously if he continues doing well then it puts more weight in the “he’s great” camp and proves me wrong, but let’s see what happens with the draw in Qatar and how we get on against the big sides.

He's beaten Germany, Spain, Croatia, Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark during his time in charge, not sure who else he has to beat to prove himself? We could ask UEFA to put Brazil in our qualifying group but I don't think they'll say yes.

I think he would struggle at club level (as he did before) but he has the right characteristics for an international manager.

I was more referencing tournaments but the Spain game was a great result but it was a classic Spurs against Pep result, but the rest of the nations league performance was par and nothing more. The current Nations league group has probably been sub par, but I wasn’t really counting those anyway.

In 2018 we lost to anyone decent and only beat Colombia on pens. England of old have lost that game on pens and we never got chance to find out what happens later.

Euro 2020 we’ve had an easy group with a declining Croatia and two munchers. Ukraine are shite and then we’ve effectively won two games with a massive home advantage against a Denmark team we are much better than and a Germany team who I thought it was accepted weren’t that good anymore?

I don’t think he’s won a game (bar Spain away) that we shouldn’t have won and he’s had some help along the way in those (this shouldn’t come into the discussion though), then lost any game we weren’t at least a 60:40 favourite. As I said if he smashes it at Qatar then he’s proving me wrong.

I think part of my disengagement with England is seeing so many of the squad behaving like twats week in week out. Kane and Henderson both think they’re refereeing games, Sterling dives more often than Tom Daley, Grealish and Pickford are more annoying than a wasp in your pants. It’s hard to transfer the contempt I have watching them against Wolves to support when they’re wearing the three lions.
