FA Cup - Wolves 1-3 Liverpool - Verdict thread.

Atmosphere seemed pretty good when the game kicked off, but only took 5 minutes or so to undo all that, as we immediately took to defending the edge of our area.

Really disappointing follow up and performance to Tuesday. Not the starting line up I’d have picked, but easy to say after, I guess.

Several terrible performances - Mane probably the worst. We’ve ran him into the ground and Edwards needs to manage his game time better.

Mané will pick up a serious injury soon if he isn't managed properly

We are playing a side significantly better than us, it's not a choice to be boxed in.
No, but equally, you need to offer *something* going the other way. I think we had a 2 minute period in the first half where we pinned them back a bit - but the rest of it, we had zero interest in doing anything other than keeping it at 0-0 for as long as possible. Not a great spectacle for all involved.

We had Tolu up front, and Angel Gomes just jogging round. Add a 0/10 from Mane and then you will have nothing.

By my maths it’ll be the 17th June before a team I support plays a game I’ll be genuinely concerned about.
Just a case of fixture fulfilment now and properly assessing who’s worth their keep next season.

Atmosphere was fine till we conceded.
The most disappointing thing for me was after we conceded the first, heads dropped immediately and we still looked shell shocked when we kicked off, lost the ball and you could see the second coming straight away.
We surely all knew what our tactics were going to be. Thought we defended well first half, Liverpool barely created anything (after they hit the post). Problem was without Andre we just couldnt get any control of the ball like we did on Tuesday.
Guessing the plan was to introduce Armstrong and Roddy after 60 minutes but the 2 quick goals fucked everything.
Thought Tolu was poor, I know people think we need him as a target man but hardly anything stuck, for such a big guy he's not very good in the air, also he's a bit of a donkey.
Mane really needs putting on the bench for a few games but we have no-one to replace him.
Oh well at least we can now concentrate on the 'great escape'😉

We didnt need a spectacle today, we needed to try and win the game by hook or by crook.
Sadly we just ran out of talent and luck. It was always gunna be very difficult to repeat Tuesday.
Thought we actually got forward a bit more in the first half tonight, just couldn't turn it into chances.

When we go down I think it will be best for all involved to see off Jean-Ricner, Hee-Chan, André, João, Rodrigo, Angel, and Tolu. Probably Jackson, too.

Hwang? Did you not see his goal? Man's a beast

I know Liverpool were out to prove a point last night (even though they were quite slow again first half) but why do we have to start every game totally defensive ? Even the commentators make the point that RE will keep it tight first half to go in 0-0
It’s hard work defending for 45 minutes and then find it hard to change the impetus.
Please let’s have a right go at the opposition. We never seem to mark anyone at throw ins - let’s just let them get on with it attitude.
Sorry - rant over

Interesting take.

Judah & Spiers think we should be forming our squad around the likes of Bellegarde, Rodrigo, Hugo & Santi next season. Suggesting they are all “too good” for the Championship.

No league wins with him in goal, only cup wins. He started against both West Ham and Everton this season in League Cup.

That's pretty much been the tactics for several weeks. Stay in the game as long as possible, keep a clean sheet.
We're better defensively now, & harder to score against. But we're still not able to create much. So edwards is saving that for after the hour mark.
Not conceding has, for some time, been the basis for us getting anything out of any game.

Yeah, like a said after the other Liverpool game, it's enjoyable to get a couple of wins, but yesterday wasn't really any different to the previous 2 matches other than the opposition converted it's considerable possession into goals. It's not a sustainable game plan for anything other than scraping points to a degree of respectability. Certainly nothing particularly positive to learn from for next season about any of the players who may be left or the manager's ability to take us back up.

Not much to add other than we have zero depth beyond a first choice XI which is deeply flawed to start with, and it shouldn't shock me but it does how poor Johnstone is. He gets nowhere near the third, with an unimpeded view from miles out and it goes nowhere near the corner.
