Decent commentators

I actually enjoy when John Virgo gets an hour or two during the Snooker at the Crucible. He reallys knows the game and is usually 100% right in predicting a players next shot. And he has a decent sense of humour too, which is nice considering he had to hang out with that prick Jim Davidson on Big Break for years

Ah, our Denise. The pride of Wolverhampton.

I remember staying up for her efforts in Sydney 2000. Just magnificent. We probably need an athletics thread before I start ruining this one with reminisces of Steve Backley and pictures of Jess Ennis...being as you're the expert, you can start it.

I might just do that...

Richie Benaud
John Arlott - both were magnificent in their day

Now - I love listening to Whispering Death on the telly and Vic Marks cracks me up on TMS.

Not really commentators as they tend to be anchors / pundits - James Richardson on serie A and Guillem Ballague on La Liga

Phil Liggett for cycling, although I have watched for years and still have never understood a sentence said by Sean Kelly or Stephen Roche.

Martin Tyler and Alan 'smudger' Smith, top class, i never forgave Barry Davies for saying 'crude but effective' after Bully had scored a goal for England, complete fucking arseole!

I always think its unfair when they interview Boxers as soon as they've finished a fight, now you could be Oscar Wilde, but after going 10 rounds your not going to be making insightful, well thought out comments are you. To be fair I'm amazed at how lucid they actually are, they certainly wouldn't be getting much out of me

He may be on ITV, but I actually quite like Jim Neilly (sp?). A reasonable, balanced antidote to the cock-pockets he has to work with.

John Murray on 5 Live is also OK.

For golf I really like Sam Torrance. Peter Alliss however is a pompous oaf.

Good call, Sam Torrance and Ken Brown must squirm having to listen to his phobia ridden rants.

When my old man was a copper, he had several dealings with Alliss and he reckoned he was a thoroughly unpleasant type.

He's a pillock. Ken Brown is a pillock too, though, and the golfers can't stand BBC covering events as they get in the way all the time and fuck things up.

John Rawling - ITV Boxing (ex beeb man)

Jonathan Agnew on TMS especially when he starts ripping intio Boycs.

Michael Vaughan is very good on TMS. He's got over the mentalness that made him start referring to himself in the third person towards the end of his captaincy.

"I've still got faith that Michael Vaughan can go out and score big runs for England".

Yes, Vaughan is excellent. What strikes me about him is his relentless positivity. You can see why he was a great captain. Whatever situation England find themselves in, he will find a positive angle to view it from, be thinking of an innovative solution.

I'm in agreement with you there.
My only regret with Vaghan's career was that the captaincy / injuries took something away from his batting and he never quite hit the heights that he did prior to getting the job.

I'd actually make a case for Michael Atherton being the best cricket broadcaster AND journalist around these days. I could listen to him all day. Earthy, funny, insightful, and commands respect.

The Sky commentary team as a whole are excellent, barring Sir IT Botham.

I give you the one and only 'Bumble', absolutely brilliant.

I don't mind Botham, mainly because he only does 30 min stints. What he does is throw out questions that fans would be asking and then you get Nasser and Athers or whoever giving a very good response. He does go over the top a bit when in angry mode, but I think he add's something.

Cricket is covered excellently both on TV (Sky) and Radio (TMS).

I'm glad in a way that the sport doesn't get the same attention in the parts of the written media as football as frankly who give a flying f**k whether or not Rio's angry about the England captaincy. He's never fit, he never plays so why on earth do we have him as captain and why should so many column inches be devoted to sources close to him.

Botham Bingo.

He'll moan about not having an extra slip/a third man/eight short legs at some point. Guaranteed.
He'll mention winning The Ashes or Mike Brearley's captaincy at some point.
He'll have an unnecessary jibe at Nasser at some point.
