Think Germany are recomissioning some of their coal fired power stations.
I'm not 100% up on our energy source, but apart from North Sea gas I thought our supplies were from the Middle East where it shipped over in frozen containers. We don't or didn't directly benefit from the Russian gas supplies, where as Europe has built up a reliance on that supply.

It would make sense for Germany to start up the Coal power stations as a short term measure, especially with Poland having a large Coal resource, that supply is pretty much secure. The difficulty is in weaning ourselves off Gas rather than any other fossil fuel

Yeah, LNG mainly from Qatar.

You need big import and compressor terminals - I think we have 2 and rest of Europe is lacking there. That's why there's been a lot of gas export from the UK since Russia.

Noticed Ratcliffe power station (coal) has been fired up a few times recently, hadn't been the case in the previous 12 months working across the road.

A quick google and we also benefit from Norways gas too, I suppose thats one of the benefits of being a week later than the Nazis invading a country :)

I remember the gas lines being put in, I think one of the bases is down in Pembrokeshire along with the Oil refinery there.

The scale of Ratcliffe power station is impressive, and I know its the dirtiest fuel but Coal could be a short term answer. Its just not very flexible in terms of production, you can't just fire up a Coal powered power station then turn it off, thats why the French used to get electric for next to nothing from us in the night as we couldn't turn the stations off and had loads spare power in the grid.

We also apparently have more than double the amount of coal stock piled that we need to cease its use come 2025, so may as well use it in the pinch we find ourselves.

South Hook, Pembrokeshire is the LNG hub and has a capability to distribute (currently) 20% of UK's daily gas needs accepting LNG from Qatar and regasifying into the grid.

Just signed up with Octopus to take part in electricity saving sessions. They'll e-mail in advance and you try to save energy at certain (probably busy) periods and be rewarded through additional money off of your bill or other rewards. If you don't save there are no penalties but it makes sense to at least try.

I did the same this morning.

Intrigued to see how they measure it. Whether you'll get rewarded for using under a certain threshold during those periods or if they benchmark it against your typical use so they don't just pay out to a load of low users.

We’ll look at your historical smart meter data leading up to a Session, and calculate what you usually use at that time of day, on average.

If the Session is on a weekday, we’ll look at your half-hourly usage over the last 10 weekdays (excluding saving session days). If the Session is on a weekend, we’ll look at your half hourly usage over the last 4 weekend days. These half hourly averages are then subject to an ‘In Day Adjustment’ which will make adjustments based on how much energy you’ve used on the day of the session.

We then use these adjusted half-hourly averages as a benchmark – so you’ll earn points for every kilowatt hour you save during your Session.

Who needs to read T&Cs when I can just copy you. 😀

Being cynical I wonder how many people be ramping up their peak time usage now so they can show the biggest possible saving.

You don't know when the sessions will be and how much the rewards are. Anyone ramping up their use in the current climate should give their heads a wobble, lie down and then be forced to read the Harry J/Johnny spats in the manager thread until they've learned their lesson.

My wife is working through 3 months' notice with a view to winding down towards retirement. Going to have a rest before looking for something part-time. Which means she will be at home from end of January, which means there`s no point me signing up, which means our energy usage is going to rocket.

Its designed to change your habits, presumably around peak times (4pm to 7pm), not necessarily to change your usage (although that will help!). Say for instance you or your good lady always puts on a wash at 4, along with the dishwasher and then proceed to cook dinner during those periods then if you swap the times to later in the evening/night/earlier in the day then you will be rewarded through the promotion as you will only need to do it in the periods when asked to do so. It only counts for electricity so she can do as she pleases with the gas heating if you have it.

It'd be helpful if as a whole, the energy industry could outline what they consider to be "peak hours". WFH has changed all that for a lot of people. So am I best off putting the washing machine on at 2pm - which three years ago I would have considered to be "off peak", most people are in the office/factory, I am at home as my office is at home and has been for 10+ years - or is that now "peak" and I'm best doing it at say, 8pm or 9pm?

Just flick a few switches off in the consumer unit mate, she'll never suss what's happening, treat it like a reward system, if she makes a particularly nice meal one evening, allow her one hour of daytime TV, It's what I'm planning but I'd rather see your wife's reaction first :)

You`ll soon find out her reaction by the lack of time I`m on here.
