I keep reading a lot about hydrogen cells being the answer. Does anyone know much about them? Obviously there is a big safety issue but using renewable electricity to produce hydrogen gas makes a lot of sense at face value.

Makes sense to me too, traditional fuels like petrol give you massive amounts of energy for not much space. I believe hydrogen cells are a more realistic bet than batteries for cars.....until the first hydrogen car blows up
 
Got to build up the network for transmission for Hydrogen, its very doable but takes time (and probably the switch off of methane).

I met the Hydrogen director for National Grid the other week - has some great plans, but that all they are..
 
JCB are thinking it’s the future fuel for their machines, already got some smaller engines up and running, and sorting infrastructure for them as well, Harry’s garage/farm on YouTube did a video about it
 
Hydrogen is definitely one to watch. One issue right now is that its generally extracted from natural gas, so thats baaad.

But if we can perfect the technology to use clean energy to split water then that could be very good indeed. Imagine a filling station with a wind turbine on top making hydrogen from clean electricity and its water supply....

Gallium nitride batteries are the future, IMV. Hydrogen is horrendously inefficient for vehicles for some reason IIRC.

NI Water are about to do it, going to use excess renewables to split water - H2 for transport and O2 for wastewater treatment.
 
Batteries aren't as dense in terms of power storage as petroleum fuels, but hydrogen can be, so there's more focus on it in areas where you still need a lot of engine power - industrial vehicles, shipping, aviation, etc.

It has a lot of downsides though, not least that it's so explosive, and right now we don't have a way of producing it at scale without using fossil fuels so it's only potentially green. But a lot of people like the idea of it because it means you don't have to actually adapt too much infrastructure versus batteries. Eg there's a government study underway atm to see if we might be able to use the existing gas grid to pump hydrogen to homes for heating instead, whereas the alternative, a mass switch to electric heat pumps, would bring with it a huge extra demand on the electrical grid, and require a huge investment in upgrading capacity there.

For a lot of applications it's going to be a race between what comes first - higher-density batteries that can match fossil fuels per cubic metre, or clean hydrogen production.
 
I think Japan are going in hard with Hydrogen, unfortunately some of the Hydrogen they are using (or going to be using) is coming from Australia, where they're burning coal to produce it.
 
Ultimately fusion is the future. In a few hundred years we will hopefully have the technology to be e able to scale it down to commercial vehicles.

Feels like we need to find a way of generating electricity in a much greener way whichever route becomes popular
 
I guess you can justify using fossil fuels to produce hydrogen in the short term if it gives long term benefits. You can’t develop the technology with a supply of fuel.

We're definately fucked. Do I believe those that devise global strategies have our best interests at heart then it's a big NO. Lot of changes occurring that will impact on lives for a very long time. I'm on the fence because I do not trust any of them.
 
Mexico is the worlds biggest beer exporter and makes 76% of all beer imported into the US.

Like a lot of North America, northern Mexico is suffering from a really serious drought. So bad that the country's president wants the area to pause making beer.
