Chelsea (H) 14/9 Build-Up and Match Thread

Moutinho was deemed surplus which is why he was sold to us for a paltry 5m.

Nope. They needed to reduce their wage bill very quickly rather than the manager thought "nah Mout is getting shit, I will sell him now", hence why they sold him and we got a bargain (in terms of fee but he is earning around 100k a week with us) and replaced him with Pele

I dont want to play u21 players who arent ready just because we dont have enough experienced first team players.

I think you will find Nuno agrees with you. He won't play anyone if they are not ready or deemed not good enough by him

:icon_lol:

Joao Moutinho was surplus does make me smile.

If he wasn't surplus to THEIR requirements at the time, he'd have stayed then right?

So essentially every player sold is because they are surplus to requirements

Depends on how you want to look at it. Monstrum mentions the likes of Drinkwater - No real future where he is so has to leave, no replacement is signed or Moutinho, a 1st teamer they want to keep but his wages make it impossible and they have to downgrade (and it was a huge downgrade as well). One of them is surplus to requirements and the other is sold due to circumstances that means players have to be moved on and replaced with cheaper players

Be great if people could just look at things in colours other than black or white.

Just because someone is young doesn't mean they aren't good enough, just the same as someone old and not playing all that regularly isn't automatically dross.

Wolves aren't the best team in the world, you don't need to be the next Messi to get minutes amongst a very small squad and there will be players deemed surplus to requirements elsewhere that are plenty good enough.

Also bought fabregas, golovin, and a senegalese center mid for a combined total of something like 70m pounds... fabregas is on a lot more money than moutinho, and I seriously doubt pele is on 50k either... not to mention pele by himself cost what 13m plus add ons plus agent fees... nearly 10m more than they would have got for mou.. to save what, 2m a YEAR on wages?

They signed Fabregas to pull them out of trouble as they were stuck in the bottom three.

Pretty sure they didn't envisage that in the summer of 2018 and had they known it would be the case then they probably wouldn't have let Joao go.

They did not sell him for footballing reasons, you just have to accept this.

They were fucked for FFP if they didn't let him go. Plus you might want to look at the sales at Monaco over the last four years. They are astronomical sums. And all just to keep afloat.

They sold mbappe for something like 200m that season they were fine. One might say... *drumroll*... he was deemed surplus to their requirements.

Edit- footballing or not, they sold him for peanuts instead of younger players. We all knew he was class. This is the type of players we should be aiming for.

Monaco were facing some FFP issues in that summer so it was some clever accounting (I believe you have another term for it...). It was made clear when we signed Mout they didn't want to sell but circumstances led to it. You don't replace Mout with Pele (£6.8Mendes) out of choice, especially as a year later they sent him to Reading

They spent a lot but I think they got in double in fees what they spent. Something like £120m spent but £240m in (that might be wrong but I know they received more than they spent)

Nuno wants to work with an outfield 18. That's the end of the discussion. I'm sure we could have signed the likes of Cahill, didn't want to

Clearly we are....or we wouldn't have signed him.

You can see what Nuno wants at Wolves so we are never going to see our squad filled with older players who we can pick up on the cheap, whether surplus or not and on the younger players, if we feel we have decent cover in our own U23 we will favour them over signing an average joe squad filler.
Also look at the investement currently being made at U23 level, this summer we have persuaded 2 highly rated kids to leave PSG and Bayern to join Wolves.

Monaco did get rid of some kids as well...for starters they sold Vinagre to us for a bargain £2m

I've only seen Nya briefly but a 5' 9" centre back without an obvious first touch is an odd choice. Jordao and Shabani look good. Lazio and Bayern to Wolverhampton isn't exactly a well trodden path granted.

I think we were in for a top class midfielder but failed in the end. Failure of the recruitment team there.

We wanted Kessie, didn't happen.

I'm pleased we didn't go "oh, sign Lemina then". I don't want utter toss at this club.

I'd also add to the kids debate that Borussia Dortmund bought a 17 year old lad last season who couldn't get a game (you could say he was surplus to requirements) for his club and was very inexperienced.

Turns out he's pretty good and now playing for his country.
