Burnley 2-1 Wolves: Verdict Thread

That was pretty horrible. A bizarre set up, we simply cannot play with no focal point. Insipid throughout with very little serious threat. Crap goals to give away. Didn't look good at the back at all, Kilman in particular was horrendous. I honestly don't understand what we were attempting to do for most of the game. Reverted at the end to having Adama run towards the corner flag and cross to no-one (that's not his fault).

Very rare that I'll dig Nuno out as the vast majority of the time I can see what the plan was, even if it didn't come off or errors let us down. Tonight I have to I'm afraid, that's on him, and no point deflecting blame towards Mason who was poor for both teams but didn't really impact on the game too much as far as I could see (you could argue that Fabio seriously bought the penalty).

Far from the end of the world and we will undoubtedly bounce back, but that was a grim watch.

For me we need to play faster, more direct not taking three-four touches every time..too easy to defend against

Also too many sideways, backward passes

But that also means you have to run more off the ball and create space and options so you can release the ball quicker

We`ve been so unpredictable this season that I am absolutely confident that we will get a result against either Man U or Spurs.

I think it's knowing when to play direct and when to wait for an opening. We used to be better at it.

Sometimes the opening is there and we still passively probe... which says to me either the players concerned aren't spotting the opening, they lack the confidence to go for it, or it's a coaching instruction

Yeah, of course you have some points there too..

Maybe the players have complained about the ref to Nuno, saying they can’t approach him/speak to him, so Nuno has taken those complaints public. I’ve read a lot of things from ex-players saying the best referees are always the ones you can approach. Mason does seem like a complete muppet.

You can count the number of decent referees at the absolute top level on one hand, which is a massive issue. Especially in a time where you’re attempting to implement such a huge change in the game with VAR etc.

I dont think the premier league has a decent ref
Mason, and the Villa twat being the worst

The best refs just get on with the game, and you don't really hear from them during the match. Seems to me too many refs want to be a "celebrity".
I've never heard Nuno have a go at anyone before, so this ref must have really pissed him off a lot. He probably opened the refs changing room door after the match and shouted "Merry xmas you cunt". Maybe not, but i would of.

It wasn't even the worst ref we've had in December, I really don't see what he's making all the fuss about tbh

Everyone has pretty much covered it, dreadful game, dreadful performance. Burnley were even knocking on the door before they scored, then Brownhill hit the bar. It honestly could have been 4-0 against a team who can’t score.

I’ve seen too many comments “we didn’t win the physical battle”, “we need to be better at their game”. There wasn’t a physical battle, and we can’t be better than Burnley at being Burnley. We basically just looked like a Sunday league team and hoofed the ball forward anyway. No quality possession or anything. Villa are a team of midgets and they ran rings around Burnley but they couldn’t finish their dinner, we didn’t create a chance. We just needed to use our Portuguese internationals ability in the CM to try and control possession higher up the pitch (not on the edge of our own area!)

But this is a fundamental problem with how we play. We play so deep that our only chance of an attack is Neto and Podence receiving the ball and running 50 yards with it. We don’t work a chance, we don’t push them back and get men in their half.

We’ve heard the “transition” thing mentioned too much. We weren’t transitioning before, we were just doing what we did before worse. Then when we actually did start transitioning (and looking dangerous with 4-2-3-1), we’ve then ditched it again. Explain how you can go 4-3-3 at Liverpool and then scrap that at Burnley with even less attacking players...

I honestly can’t get my head round how bad we are as an attacking unit. Like I’ve said a million times, it’s not what we play it how we play. Podence and Neto up top might have worked if we actually tried to get players within 10 yards of them. But it’s just so dull and negative and I don’t understand why.

Few individual things to mention. RAN playing as the WB was the right thing in a “horses for courses” approach, but he did absolute zero in an attacking sense other than fake pass > drag back > pass to Saiss. If he wasn’t going to cross the halfway line and we were going to play so deep we may aswell have played Saiss there and had more height in the team.

Semedo don’t give away a goal today, but he didn’t do anything either. We need more from him surely? He’s our big summer signing in a key position but I don’t think he’s anymore a RWB than he is a RB. He gets forward a lot and makes loads of runs, but I don’t actually think it’s ever going to lead to anything. He had that good opportunity to cross early doors and he just scuffed it. He doesn’t ever beat a man dribbling, hasn’t demonstrated any lethal crossing, doesn’t score, not great defending. Expensive run of the mill player who’s got a mistake in him. I Honestly don’t know what he is.

Neves was dreadful. Ashley Westwood was better than him. Why is everything so rushed? Why are you playing like Dave Edwards? Again partly down to this deep dull football we play where he has no outlets, but Nuno must like it this way...

Otasowie was given no chance today. Looked like a 5 a side player in an 11 a side game. He’s got decent skills but playing him as some #10, false 9, I don’t even know is just a shocker.

And the ref was fine. Wasn’t even that physical a game. Nuno just looking for someone to blame.

One more thing. Short Corners...

Im not normally against them. But when our execution is as bad as ours, seriously. Get them in the bin. They look like a Sunday league team who just decide to take a short one on a whim.

If these have been practised and rehearsed then I can only assume they are trying them against traffic cones. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a team who somehow manage to turn attacking throw ins and corners into a positive for the opposition.

What are we doing on the training pitch week in week out? We were better with the EL when we didn’t do any training. Maybe that’s the problem.

I don't think he is making a fuss. It was 1 part of his post match stuff. We are the ones making a fuss because he rarely has a pop at the refs.
He hasn't done a Donald Trump and spent all evening calling the ref a stupid name, calling the result fake and refusing to accept we got 0 points due to a corrupt ref.
Something fucked him off and for once he spoke about it.

Mout is in charge of the corner routines apparently

Nope as he also covered the things we got wrong in his post match stuff so he is not blaming the ref. Even his comments on the ref say he didn't influence the result.

It has been totally covered. That was as bad as I have seen from us. It is a depressingly familiar story so far this season. A very lightweight and non threatening attack as there is little help from midfield, and a porous defence conceding sloppy and preventable goals. No one above 6/10. Plenty of 4s and 5s. Including Nuno for being outmanaged by gravel- voiced Dyche. If you cant say anything good say nothing.

The penalty was well taken!

That to me was a real ‘alarm bells are ringing’ performance. Nuno looked like a shell in the dugout and several of the players didn’t look happy. Neves’ body language when he as subbed was just awful.

A few random comments…

Patricio – fuck’s sake, come and claim the ball occasionally. I’d swap you for Pope in an instant

Semedo – reminds me of my first wife. Seemed like a great idea at the time, but quickly clear it wasn’t working, despite occasional hot moments. It’s going to cost you a lot of money, but the sooner you admit you got it wrong and get rid the better…

Moutinho and Neves – just doesn’t work any more. Neves is regressing at an alarming rate. And if Mout is in charge our corners and free kicks then just sack him. We need a dead ball coach. I remember getting dog’s abuse on this forum a year ago saying most neutral football fans would take Grealish and McGinn over Moutinho and Neves. Would most neutral football fans now take Westwood and Brownhill?

Otasowie – did well, I thought. Must have been as shocked as the rest of us when he was told he was the big man up top

Nuno – how many times has Nuno known the exam questions before the exam and still failed? It is Burnley & Sean Dyche FFS

This forum – would have produced a better summer recruitment strategy than Nuno, Mendes and Jeff Shi
