Burnley 2-1 Wolves: Verdict Thread

If we want to play a more possession based game playing 5 at the back and then having Neves drop deep is not the way. With Neto, Pod and Otasowie isolated up front and Burnley pressing the only option for a controlled forward pass was Moutinho. He is good but he’s not a miracle worker. A passing game requires players who can pass but just as importantly it needs players to pass to and that requires movement into space. If you watch Man City or Liverpool the player in possession usually has two or three passing options, we often have none hence the procession of sideways and backwards passes. That comes from how we set up.

It’s no surprise that the one game this season where we have looked really good was against Palace who left both wingbacks free giving easy outlets. Other teams have nullified the wingbacks and Burnley did it really well. As said above if they then just pass backwards might as well pick players who can at least defend.

Summat ay right when we're making such obvious and fundamental mistakes, I just don't know what

That to me was a real ‘alarm bells are ringing’ performance. Nuno looked like a shell in the dugout and several of the players didn’t look happy. Neves’ body language when he as subbed was just awful.

A few random comments…

Patricio – fuck’s sake, come and claim the ball occasionally. I’d swap you for Pope in an instant

Semedo – reminds me of my first wife. Seemed like a great idea at the time, but quickly clear it wasn’t working, despite occasional hot moments. It’s going to cost you a lot of money, but the sooner you admit you got it wrong and get rid the better…

Moutinho and Neves – just doesn’t work any more. Neves is regressing at an alarming rate. And if Mout is in charge our corners and free kicks then just sack him. We need a dead ball coach. I remember getting dog’s abuse on this forum a year ago saying most neutral football fans would take Grealish and McGinn over Moutinho and Neves. Would most neutral football fans now take Westwood and Brownhill?

Otasowie – did well, I thought. Must have been as shocked as the rest of us when he was told he was the big man up top

Nuno – how many times has Nuno known the exam questions before the exam and still failed? It is Burnley & Sean Dyche FFS

This forum – would have produced a better summer recruitment strategy than Nuno, Mendes and Jeff Shi
Yay, gives me chance to drag this back up

I've read some bollox over the years, but this.......

He's probably untouchable like on TWF.

The Adama stat gets pulled out plenty, when was Moutinho's last goal or assist?
He shouldn't have started - Neves & Otasowie both played and worked well against Chelsea - the issue last night was we ripped that up.

Agreed. You can't help changes when they're forced on you through injury etc but Nuno is adding extra tinkering to the mix.

I don't get the U-turn. We used to pride ourselves on being well-drilled, having partnerships linking up all over the pitch, everyone knowing their place. Now it's a surprise every week, but it seems to confuse our players and fans more than the opposition.

Think Nuno has lost his way a bit, too much tinkering, I know we've got injury problems but even so that doesn't excuse our performance last night.
silva didn't have much direct impact when he came on (apart from a superb pen) but he gave the rest of the team a target, we immediately started creating things. I don't know why after the Saints and Arsenal games we changed things again when imo in those two games we looked the most cohesive as an attacking unit than we have for a very long time.

I think these players need some consistency now. Whatever evolutionary destination is in Nuno's mind, let's get a team together that the opposition has to worry about instead of this chaotic approach.

I feel for the young players we bought; such talent could flourish if integrated into a confident, well oiled system. How is it helping Otasowie, Silva or Vitinha dropping them into this maelstrom, especially when many of the senior players aren't covering themselves in glory.

Changing how we play and then basing our transfer policy almost exclusively on unproven youth looks a very unwise and disconnected approach now.

Nuno hasn’t said the referee affected the result at all, it’s the way he does the job that’s the problem.

“It is not about the crucial mistakes or decisions, it is about the way he handles the game. The players get nervous, too much voices, he whistles by the voices when some players are shouting.

He cannot control the players, the players are constantly arguing – both teams. With all the other referees the game flows, there’s dialogue. He’s just not ready to do it.”

That's just weird. Nuno... Concentrate on your own job mate
He is. As he rarely talks about refs, we are over doing the reaction to it. I would get it if that is all he spoke about but is one 1 part of his post match stuff. The rest he does concentrate on his own job.

This is close to becoming more than it actually is and just like Nuno on his tactics last night, over thinking it

We're talking about it as it's a major talking point of the fallout from the game. No over-thinking here.

It's the main focus of the news relating to the match last night, and all over social media, especially with Pod doubling down on it.

The fact that he feels it warrants a prominent place in the dissection of the match is a massive behavioural change for him, therefore comment worthy

Didn't post last night and haven't got the time to go through and read all the previous posts.

Adama's performance was like have Charles Charlie Charles on the wing. What's he going to do this time...............?

Edit - Sorry it was Finney on the wing not Charles Charlie Charles.

Not saying its not comment worthy, just the over thinking of it and the "using him as an excuse" which he hasn't done.

I think you're over thinking it mate.

Punts said he thought Nuno was looking to blame someone, I said Nuno's comments were weird. That's it. Hardly an 'over done' reaction.

It's the leading item on the Sky App so bigger than just on here. Looking back the only time we've had Mason in a league game this or last season before last night was the Newcastle game when he gave a soft free kick in the last minute

So I will stick with this opinion "This is close to becoming more than it actually is" and walk away from this.
