Boxing thread

I am not a boxing fan as I cannot see the point in someone beating someone else senseless. But why don't boxers wear protective headgear to help prevent this kind of injury?

The protective head guard is purely for aesthetic purposes, it provides no protection at all, apart from cuts. In fact, I'd say it makes it worse as it offers a bigger target.

He was getting absolutely hammered. When he was pinned on the ropes he's throw a punch just to keep him in the fight, but that's all it was. The uppercuts which he was just letting himself get hit by were horrible to watch. Leaving his hand wide protecting the hook and jab but just wide open for the uppercut. No matter how many times he was hit there he just let it happen.

In the current guise headgear made the angle of Vision worse which meant an increase in head injuries. Boxers just weren't prepared for hits and that is a major part of concussive injury. Better headgear would make injuries harder to come by but this is not a priority for boxing.

Simply put, the referee should've stopped the fight, but like DW, I watched the fight and it looks like not only did Blackwell protect himself but actually fought back. I don't think there's anything that could've been done that should have.

His corner would have some blame if some are gonna blame the ref

Johnny completely right and no headgear this summer in rio

Haven't they stopped wearing head gear in amateur boxing?

They have, right reasons too. The headgear should be better but it isn't and it was contributing to an increased risk in concussion which is unnecessary.

I find it brutal. Choke holds particularly.

That's fair enough. Any choke holds though usually mean the fight is over in seconds as a good percentage will tap out. The knockouts do tend to be more brutal than in boxing but the standard of refereeing is spot on and fights are stopped straight away. I'm a fan as well as i am a fan of boxing, i think they both have a place.

My view on the fight last night was that it should have been stopped earlier than it was, i know that Blackwell still had his hands up and was fighting back but he was getting hit with every punch and you could see the damage it was doing. Blackwell was never going to give up but sometimes that decision has to be made and i agree with NWW that the corner have to take some of the blame.

Fair enough mate. I also don't like the cage. What next? Weapons?!

The cage is there for the fighters safety as it stops them getting thrown out or falling out while grappling. They don't use it as a weapon to throw their opponent into and they aren't allowed to hold on to it plus there are several padded areas in between each panel of the cage.
