Best holiday destinations

Cool. Where are you staying? Please don't mention 'UK' holiday whilst you're there or that you went to Guernsey first 😉
Outside St Hellier, Beachcomers Hotel, Grouville. The bus service looks really good so will be using it to get around

Yeah, the no1 route St Helier to Gorey Pier is about every 15 mins during the day. There's a couple of options with the buses. You can pay using contactless, buy an AvanchiCard pre-paid which you top up (fare is cheaper than contactless), buy an unlimited travel pass for 1, 2, 3 or 7 days, and pay cash (the most expensive option). Fares are a standard charge irrespective of the number of stops.

Gorey has some good restaurants and Mont Orguel castle is a must visit.

Grouville oysters rock!

A couple of recommendations for dining in Gorey (I suggest you pre-book);
Bass and Lobster
Sumas
The Moorings

Anyone been to/has recommendations for Buenos Aires?

Going to a few places in South America next month but have a couple of days in BA at the start. Wanted to do the River Plate and Boca Stadium tours but conscious of not making it all about football too. That said, the fixtures for second half of their Primera Division have just been announced and bloody hell, River are at home in the evening of the day we arrive (Boca who would’ve been the dream are at home the day we leave unfortunately). Looks like tickets are available via season ticket holders who themselves offer independent trips for tourists (yeah, I know) but they look kosher with good reviews and definitely fancy a piece of that.

Aside of that, would be nice to see some street Argentine Tango, walkabout, eat and drink in an authentic and relatively safe district so recommendations there would be appreciated. On the subject of safety, is a bit of a concern and interested to hear how others found that. Not sure how the natives would take to English particularly at the football but maybe it’s something and nothing on a matchday where there might be loads of tourists anyway and no big deal.

Any recommendations for Vancouver? Heading there for a few days on my way home from Aus in a couple of weeks.

Stanley Park
Definitely this if you have a short time there. I did a run around the circumference and it was awesome.

Gastown is good for a night out too.

It's quite tough seeing all the homeless and fentanyl users in Vancouver though.

Stanley Park and the Island for sure.

Walking around Robson St is cool if you like that kind of shopping thing.
The city beaches were great, like English Bay walking up to or down from Stanley Pk, though not sure how they are in winter.
Dont linger too long / keep your eyes peeled near St Paul’s hospital on Burrard. And that’s a strong tip from a Vancouver resident for many years.

Thanks, I've got a car so pretty free, there from Friday-Tuesday.

Parkrun on Saturday and then planning to drive up to Whistler for 2 days skiing Sunday/Monday so these are all good suggestions, thank you!

I’ve been to Boca, but many, many years ago, and though it was amazing (seriously nuts actually) it looks like River is just as good, perhaps even crazier atmosphere from what friends have shown and told me. One of those football rivalries where the external view of which is ‘better’ might not be the same as on the ground (like Betis / Sevilla).
When I was at the match there was a half-time parade to commemorate the Malvinas. Got a bit uncomfortable, but was easy enough to become Irish for 10 minutes and agree the English are pricks. Did border on feeling necessary at the time, though I was young…
Everywhere else was amazing, Argentina was my favourite country to visit, incredibly friendly even when they know you’re English. Palermo the fancy neighbourhood which was safe enough back then. Atmosphere bit of a rollercoaster over the years though and my intel is seriously out of date. Imagine the steak, wine and women )hey, men too I’m sure) are still incredible mind.

Fascinating place that is easy to love at face value but has a darker side too that is worth exploring if you’re into that sort of thing. I’d be inclined to have a good poke around.

Can’t recommend highly enough taking the bike tour as a start. Takes in all the things you’d expect including Stanley Park, but it’s where it starts to get interesting. Weaves through the original 1880’s settlement houses, then over to the early grand official buildings where there are some uncomfortable truths around development rights and conflict with indeginous people that despite attempts to brush under the carpet are not going away. Then past the big-bucks chintzy seafront flats built with Chinese and (allegedly) dirty Russian money, then onto beautiful Stanley Park with its Totem poles etc. Again, some paradoxes here, British Columbia is proud of its methods of power generation and very keen to present its green credentials (look at all the roof gardens on the flats), but at SP look across the bay to the immense number of ships exporting Canadian coal to be burned at power stations spewing their shit in Asia. They tend to keep rather quiet about that one.

A real controversial one though would be suggesting going to Downtown Eastside where the fentanyl crisis and political strategies is playing out on the streets with devastating affect. You question whether you should be there and have to handle that one very sensitively, but seeing that with your own eyes has to make you question everything. How you do that without being a gawping tourist I don’t know, but its something I felt I had to do and each person will have their own views on that. Regardless of your political leanings the decriminalisation and well-intended policies to supply safe drugs and their consequences are worth reading about before going there. At least the zombies don’t need to fund their habits so you can walk past without worrying about having your phone nicked and people can get to work so that’s erm, something I suppose. Jesus Christ, no wonder it’s a confusing place.

But for the traditionally touristy side, definitely Gastown for fun, eating, drinking etc. They’re very proud of the exceptional beers being produced there now so a good session with a sample rack of say 5 or 7 on the go is a must. Loads of similar bars but Steamworks is fantastic with about 20 on the go at any time and fantastic pub-type restaurant-standard food.

If you want to get out of the city for a bit, take the free Lonsdale ferry across to North Vancouver and go across the Capilano suspension bridge and you might as well be in the wilderness for your nature fix. All the treetop experiences and that sort of stuff there. Several other similar opportunities in VC which are relatively cheap and convenient for a day trip and worth a google.

So yeah, quite a place. Depends on how heavy you want to go and what you’re after. but I’d get stuck right in. It’ll be one to remember either way.

There was a good display a few weeks ago that you could see even as far north as the NSW / QLD border. Nothing obvious tonight yet from what i saw outside a few minutes ago. I will check again later, but I think I am too far north tonight.

Thanks for that, appreciated.

I’m booking tickets through Homefans and it looks like it’s essentially ST holders who have a couple of spares to make a few quid taking tourists along. Meet the family and host pre-match for a few beers and food, mix with the fans for the authentic experience sort of thing, and look out for your safety too I guess. It’s not as though we look particularly menacing so hopefully be ok. Kick off not til 10.30pm and it looks like they sell out 85,000 every game so should be quite an experience.

Funnily enough will be visiting the Malvinas/Falklands several days later too but I think at the match I’ll just keep quiet about that! Not been to South America and looking forward to seeing a few countries with an inkling it’s be somewhere to fall in love with, but absolutely shitting myself about going round Cape Horn with everything you read about rough seas in the Drake Passage.

Anyway, too late to change now, it’ll be fine 🤞

Sounds like an absolute winner. When I went to the footy it was pre internet so just rocked up at the training ground the day before to get tickets. Then took our chances in Boca. Hard to describe the full chaos at that match. Suffice to say it’s the only time I’ve seen anyone try and launch a huge hot air balloon on a pitch. No surprise, given it soon lost control, wiped out the punters in the main / Maradona box stand as it left the ground, and then popped on a floodlight. Guys who evacuated the basket had to be stretched off the pitch, and also nearly vanished as the pitch was about a foot deep in ticker tape.

Funny thing was, that was all before kick off too.

Puts ‘top bins wins’ in its place.
