Beer

The White Horse in Milton

Good choice. Long while since I was in there but some great beer and much more choice than the Lion and Lamb over the road which was a GK house with the awful generic IPA - Abbott - Old Speckled Hen offerings if I recall correctly. That said, pretty sure that’s based on the first, erm, ‘Gentlemen’s evening’ I went to in L+L decades ago so much might’ve changed since then.

I tended to use all the usual suspects off Mill Road, the real ale houses, the Blue, Kingston, Petersfield, Salisbury etc. Fabulous pubs with stonking beer and very good food, but as good as they are never quite had the feel of a local. Not too often you get as many beers on offer as you do at the White Horse and that place ticks an awful lot of boxes for your ideal local.

The Lion and Lamb is still rubbish, poorly kept beer at over-inflated prices. The other two pubs in the village are also pretty decent, three good ale houses for a population of about a thousand isn't bad going. I frequent the ones you mentioned around Mill Road too, though they are a cycle ride away, in fact I was in the Blue and the Kingston on Saturday.

Would imagine most places are in the grip of some big brewery but it always felt Cambridge was a very extreme version of that with the GK stranglehold. Some of the tourist pubs (Eagle/Bath/Granta) would do ok regardless, but the GK pubs on the periphery tended to be struggling shitholes. I can probably count 15-20 that have closed in my time there and most were GK. The surviving ones have improved a bit to be fair but are still limited choice and cheap (not necessarily in cost) food. It’s no wonder the Freehouses are always rammed and you can barely get a seat.

On the subject of Milton though, a special shout out to the Milton Brewery. They do some amazing beers but their very first, Pegasus, has to be one of the best traditional, old-skool ales around. It’s great to try new stuff but sometimes you just want to go back to basics and sink a few jars and Pegasus is I reckon one of the best money can buy. Not available in many places but a swift last orders Peg in the Devonshire after getting off the London train was always a thing of joy.

Sorry to the rest of you for this Cambridge centred chat, but I'd say it is probably the best city of its size in the UK for proper beer. Huge numbers of craft and real ale bars and pubs, and quite a few brewpubs and small breweries - I can't say I have had to drink GK or anything else of a similar ilk for years, though I do like an odd pint of well kept Abbott to round the evening off sometimes.

It's always been a disappointment that Milton Brewery have never had a pub in the village, I was told once that the rents were too expensive for them, and the brewery itself is now in Waterbeach. They also have The Haymakers in Chesterton, which is a bit closer than The Devonshire. I'm also a big fan of Brewboard in Harston, and Calverley's which backs onto the railway line not far from Mill Road.

Off to Ricky again shortly, need to decide whether it’s Wishful Drinking or Pour Me tomorrow. The food in Pour Me looks the bollocks but Wishful Drinking is closer and has better beers. Decisions decisions.
