Beer

Went into Tesco to get the shopping and I was accosted by a bird flogging..... Guinness Black Lager!!

Now I don't drink lager, but I had a sample and it was very interesting!

A brave bold move indeed! Black Lager???

It tasted just like lager, but you could tell it was a Guinness product, probably due to the dark roast barley that makes it so distinctive.

As the little leaflet says, "It offers the refreshing taste of lager with all the character and substance of Guinness"

It's 4.5% so reasonably strong but fuck me, it's pricey!

I think it was around €6.70 for 4 small bottles.

Do you lot get this stuff over in the UK? Anyone heard of it?

Sounds very gimmicky to me mate.

Really? I can't think of a blander pint than Doom Bar. It's not that it's badly kept, just that it's extremely boring. But I think that's the case with many Cornish ales - too malty and plain. Though I like Proper Job and Tribute - they seem to have a bit more about them.

But Sharps and Skinners - meh. Each to their own I guess.

Possibly, but a very expensive albeit a powerful one.
Not being a lager drinker, I actually found it oddly pleasing.

There's a fruit that smells appalling but tastes like a sweet strawberry.
Wray (Wing) is a lovely bit of fish, but gives off a strong smell of urine.

This stuff LOOKS like Guinness but really tastes like lager!

So it's a gimmick then! I presume it's pricier than other lagers?

Down at the bottom of my post....

Do you have it in the UK?
Either way, how much would you pay for 4 x 33cl bottles of lager?

I've not seen it - but it's not something I'd notice TBF. You can get 4 bottles for around £5-£6 I think.

You can usually get 4 bottles for about £4 if on offer or about £5 if not

Depends what you are looking for. If I was to go to Morrisons this afternoon then 4 cans of say Fosters is going to be £3.50, 4 Carlsbergs £4.00 (they are doing a ten-pack but that has gone up to £9 this week)

Very rare I buy lager in bottles unless I am on the continent.

In fact, (I just remembered Langers - with you going on about gimmicks!) a couple of years ago, Guinness were obviously short of something to do and brought out a series of Guiness Stouts. They celebrated this with a series of commemorative glasses. (Brewmaster Series, Storehouse Series?? Might have that wrong)

Each of the brews were slightly different, and again if I'm not mistaken, Chilled or Cold Guinness came out of this experiment, which come to think of it dates it a lot earlier....

It's an age thing!

If I'm going to buy lager, I'd go for Budvar or something similar - the off license near me has a decent selection. I do quite enjoy Budvar.

It's a small black bottle, with a silver collar and a large silver lable with a blue band at the bottom.
Gold harp, Guinness Black Lager underneath it.

For the novelty, I'd suggest you try this gentlemen. Just indeed for the novelty of it.

If you like lager that is.

Budvar on draft FTW. I just don't buy bottles for home drinks any more

I'm not a Budvar fan, its too sweet for me. I bought 36 bottles of Heineken for £22. Not the best lager, but its better than most of the shit you get on offer.

You should always buy bottles over cans IMO. It always seems to me that they put more gas in cans than in bottles. Also bottles stay cold for longer once out of the fridge because aluminium is a better heat conductor than glass. Glass is also supposedly more favourable for recycling purposes and the enviroment.

I prefer the taste out of bottles personally as the aluminium does seem to give cans a slightly odder taste.

How come we don't get those twist top bottles for beer like they have in the US? We have to use bottle openers yet you see them just twisting theirs off.

I'm not a big fan of Stella, I can't stand it on draft, nor in a can (Terrible Heartburn) but I really like it in a bottle.

Bottled beer is loads nicer, you don't get that tinny taste. Heineken is a nice drink now, as long as its cold, suits the stronger alcohol content

Harp lager, now that was fucking cat piss, I used to hate Banks because it was either that or the Aussie shite - and will someone please tell the Beligiums that we have our own range of Cider, if we wanted to drink your offering that at best can be called Woodpecker lite we'll let you know
