2015 Cricket World Cup Australia/ New Zealand

what a pants effort in all 5 games. Moores has to go, disgusting. Bangladesh win having been 8-2 ! Morgan another 3 ball wonder. The talent is in the squad but the bowlers dont mix it up enough or bowl enough yorkers and the batsmen dont lookm anywhere near as threatening as other teams. Maxwell yesterday but they also have finch , Warner, Smith. We have .......... yes I am struggling. Taylor is good but not a powerhouse, Ali and Buttler on their day but its not often their day when it comes to the big scores against big sides. We fiddle around with people trying to get them to do things that arent natural to them. Finn and Jordan have gone backwards over the last 2 years and I put the blame on coaching. Aussies just said to Johnson bowl quick and dont worry if you spray it around a bit - it will come and it did.

A good point about Johnson. Years ago Bob Willis was having a terrible time bowling numerous no balls which was affecting him. When Mike Brearley was re-appointed as captain he just told Willis to bowl as fast as he could and not worry about no balls. He also told Willis he would not change the field around if he got knocked around the park. Hence a rejuvenated RGD Willis who rampaged through the Australian team at Headingley.

Paul Downton seems to be setting out to keep Moores and Morgan in post. Not good enough - he should go too.

My hope is he also backed Cook about a week before he got sacked. Downtown has also said he's only just realising that t20 is influencing one day cricket. Brilliant.

Roy
Bell
Taylor
Root
Buttler
Moeen
Stokes
Woakes
Rashid
Jordan
Broad

That's probably my ODI team going forward fwiw. Bowling still needs work but we haven't got many options.

Hales in for roy and that would be mine too.

Pretty toothless bowling attached though, really wish we can some genuine quicks - perhaps jordan and stokes might get there.

Too many young quicks going backwards lately, Overton x 2, Mills and Meaker spring to mind.

How about Plunkett? Genuinely quick these days and a good batsman.

I would have Finn instead of Broad. Finn can bowl with great aggression, we just need to get the best out of him. Like Hales he has been messed about too much.

I don't disagree that Finn has been handled poorly - unrecognisable from what he was two years ago in India - but we have given him a lot of opportunities. He's been in the team for the three series preceding this World Cup and then got the first four games in the tournament itself - rarely has ever shown any pace. If he isn't bowling quickly then he isn't of any use to us, and he needs to remedy that before he comes back into the team. It isn't for England to give him endless games and hope he just gets better, that's the mistake we've made with Morgan.

Fair comment DW, but we know that Finn can bowl very quickly. Maybe under a new regime he can get his old aggression back.

Plunkett is possible, I still have hopes for Meaker to make it, Matthew Dunn is another at Surrey who did well last season who may be a future star (although he got injured while at the winter EPP thing) and further in the future Tom Curran looks a bit of a star. There have been plenty of 'future stars' who have gone backwards as you say though so no telling how anyone will end up.

But why are our younger pace bowlers not making it into the England squad? Surely after this debacle no-one could complain if we threw the youngsters in and said they would be given a chance. We could not do any worse.

There's little point throwing in young players unless they're of the required standard, and we don't appear to have many right now. Maybe more will appear over the next couple of years but we can't just pick them if they aren't ready. Prolonged poor results because we picked sub-standard players out of a wish to have "new blood" would be counter-productive.

There are players I think have no future - realistically I see little point in picking Bell, Trott, Anderson, Morgan, Bopara or Tredwell in ODIs again (gives me no pleasure to say that with the first three) - and others such as Rankin where it would be a seriously retrograde step to return to them. But we do need to make sure whoever comes in isn't being promoted just because of what year it says on their passport.

I was really hopeful for meaker, looked like he could be a really good player, but was pretty poor last season.

I like plunkett, but I doubt he'll be around in 4 years time.

'Rashid, Plunkett, Gillespie', hey Deutsch Wolf, you leave Yorkshire alone. :)

I think so, yes. We've already had an Australian bowling coach and an Australian Academy head, if it's a progression in their career then I think they would.

It was said on the radio this evening that an IPL coach gets more for a month or so's cricket than the England Coach does for a year and therefore isn't as attractive, particularly to none English guys anymore.

Would an Australian coach England?

I think that there would be a lot of interest from cricket coaches across the world. It would be a great opportunity for a coach to prove himself at the highest level. Despite all our recent problems, there are good cricketers in England, and the counties have excellent academies that are bringing younger players through. Whoever takes overall control of the England set up will also need to be given control at all levels, and hopefully younger players can gradually be introduced to the international scene. Some-one like Darren Lehmann would be ideal.

After being beaten by India, Ireland must now beat Pakistan if they are to qualify for the knock out stages.
