2015 Cricket World Cup Australia/ New Zealand

Talkback radio station 3AW in Melbourne: "JUST IN! Bangladesh has avoided embarrassment, holding off a brave challenge from World Cup minnow England by 15 runs in Adelaide."

I think the Aussies are enjoying this.

Moores is talking to TV now. "We'll have to analyse the game data"

What is there to analyse? They scored too many runs and our strongest batting line up ever (I'm looking at you Paul Collingwood) wasn't good enough to chase what in current ODI terms is an easy total to chase.

I remember a headline in an Australian newspaper a which said World Cup upset England beat Scotland. They may have been closer to the truth than they anticipated.

At least we know that England should beat Afghanistan without too much trouble.

I thought he was joking when he said this but apparently he was serious!

Change of coach needed ASAP there are plenty out there like Gillespie or Kluesner to mention who think would be a cut above Moores.
The Ashes are going to be humiliating I'm afraid.
This should be a watershed moment in English cricket, but it won't be the ECB will just plod along.

Just after Hales came in Agnew was on TMS commentary with Tim Neilson. Agnew said something like "he needs to play correctly now, play himself in and knock the ball around". Neilson said "I disagree now is his opportunity to show the World what he is all about and take the game away from Bangladesh". I thought that said a lot about how we as nations view the one day game.

Agree we try to play the one day game with a test match attitude, the most worrying thing is how limp our bowling is with no real sign of any fresh talent coming through.
I'd say it feels very 1990's at the moment and may do for a while.

Does Agnew with those remarks show a fear of losing your wicket while Nielson is all about going out and grasping the opportunity. Mindset.

It's time up for Jimmy in ODIs (quite clearly not still going to be able to play both formats come 2019 when he will be 37) and Broad needs to sort his fitness and mental issues out. Woakes should be good for a while, I have hopes for Jordan even if he is erratic at the moment. Finn should be left alone until he regains his pace, as an 82-85mph bowler he is just bang average and leaks runs. Stokes will come back into the team at some point although I think his bowling is very much his weaker suit, bit of a golden arm but again too expensive.

I said before the tournament that Adil Rashid would have been a nice idea given that we showed little inclination to pick Tredwell. Offers plenty batting wise and a different spin option in the absence of a left armer. Apparently he is in strong contention to go to the Caribbean next month, which is fine but a bit late now.

I'd have rather seen Keith Barker - again, someone who can produce in more than one discipline - given a run at the team rather than Gurney when we were looking at left arm seam options. Gurney has always looked like a Peter Martin/Martin Bicknell/Chris Silverwood type to me, honest enough and will get wickets domestically but a couple of notches short at international level and so it proved.

Since 2009 England have lost to Netherlands twice, Ireland and Bangladesh twice in either T20 or one day world cups. That is shambolic and highlights how archaic are approach is.
We'll probably win the test series in the West Indies and everyone will seem rosey again until the summer.
As I said the ashes are out the window but you could easily see us losing at home to New Zealand.

I'd agree with most of that, the fact is we don't pick our best one day players, another stupid factor is playing Buttler at 7 I'd put him in at 5 and bring stokes in at 7 for the future.
I'd move Taylor to 3 and drop Bell and put Hales into open. we have to start looking at the likes of Roy and Vince to good one day players who deserve a chance.

Hales/Roy
Root
Taylor
Vince
Buttler
Moeen/Rashid
Stokes

That looks a promising top seven (you can be as flexible as you like with the order as all of them can bat in a variety of positions). Send them out with the mentality that 320-330 is par in all but the most challenging conditions.

Buttler is our best ODI batsman and having him come in at seven is just crazy. Look at Australia this tournament, they have played it based on form and Smith and Maxwell have gone up the order as time has gone on. When they lost a wicket before a Powerplay and Clarke was due in they changed the order, smart management. Michael Clarke is one of the very best batsmen of the last decade but he doesn't have such an ego as to lessen the team's chances of posting a big total. Morgan has never bowed to the inevitable and put himself behind players in much better form, says it all that it was a blessing that today at least he went for a very quick duck rather than chewing up dozens of dot balls for a nothing score as he has previously. That is the level we are at!

Yep similar to what I'd go with I'd be tempted to give the captaincy to Joe Root. Morgan should no leave for good, Bell should concentrate on test cricket as should Anderson. Broad is all over the place now but when fully fit and inform can destroy a side in one session.

Yeah, Root for me too. I want Moores gone as soon as is practical and I'd be giving Jason Gillespie a call.

Neither Broad or Anderson had done anything to suggest they should have been in the World Cup squad. They are fine in tests, but we still have this mentality of our best test players being our best one day players. Most other countries have long since abandoned that policy, we now need somebody who can drag the England one day team into modern day thinking.

Get ready for lots of colum inches wasted on this guy over the coming weeks.....

what a pants effort in all 5 games. Moores has to go, disgusting. Bangladesh win having been 8-2 ! Morgan another 3 ball wonder. The talent is in the squad but the bowlers dont mix it up enough or bowl enough yorkers and the batsmen dont lookm anywhere near as threatening as other teams. Maxwell yesterday but they also have finch , Warner, Smith. We have .......... yes I am struggling. Taylor is good but not a powerhouse, Ali and Buttler on their day but its not often their day when it comes to the big scores against big sides. We fiddle around with people trying to get them to do things that arent natural to them. Finn and Jordan have gone backwards over the last 2 years and I put the blame on coaching. Aussies just said to Johnson bowl quick and dont worry if you spray it around a bit - it will come and it did.
