Wolves 0-1 Tottenham: Verdict Thread

As said in the match thread, a player so quick of pace and with his feet should be going around the keeper, at worst he gets tripped by the keeper, at best he scores.

Adama thoughtfully trying to place it just seems at odds with Adama as a player
I don't understand why he doesn't round the keeper either and said this to a number of folks today.

He's probably the fastest player in the league and the best dribbler so why didn't he do it?

Alli played the ball wide of Sa and then left his right leg hanging out to make it look like a foul. Players do this all the time and referees fall for it. Sa did nothing wrong. Atwell was conned and VAR were conned. Still don't understand why as it's as plain as day.
I thought that earlier but am watching motd before commenting further

That still looks like Alli was completely looking for it. But we had enough chances to win . Must start scoring. Loving how we are playing. Max Kilman looks a bit good too.

xG isn't perfect and doesn't take into account the player taking the shot but where the shots are taken from.

The fact we underperform the stat means the player taking that shot isn't a very good finisher as the average finisher would be expected to score.

Surprised the xG is so high, some of the chances now I have seen them properly aren't what I'd consider high quality ones, lot of frantic and snatched at ones.

Also whilst I get Alli is starting to go over you can't come out the way Sa did, shame as looked and sounded very good otherwise, already winning me over.

Garth Crooks outdoes himself, by including Deli Ali in his “team of the week”…

Not really. Pretty much no shot is ever worth exactly 1 so it’s not about that. Traore’s will have been about 0.5 I reckon, maybe slightly less he’s expected to score it about half the time.

xG is much more useful for trends anyway than individual shots. On a match by match basis it just helps to see which team had the better chances.

what will be more interesting is if Traore stays and keeps posting 0.5 xG per game because that would be extremely high, particularly for him. And then we’d see him start scoring some goals I think

After watching MOTD that Jimenez chance is massive. Poor touch and worse shot.

We’ve got to hope he can start scoring as he’s not being replaced. We’ve got to hope Traore starts putting some away and Trincao gets up to speed as well.

Podence is coming back but wouldn’t bank on him staying fit or scoring loads and even if we do sign someone (Guedes) then he isn’t going to come in and fix our goalscoring woes.

Agree that the Jimenez we knew wasn't shabby at all. Obviously he isn't up to speed yet this season.
From what i have seen we will get there IF we get a couple of players in. The midfielder who can score and go box to box, and win tackles is vital (is there one?) and a goal scorer.
In fairness you have it pretty much nailed on. You seem to know more about us than your own team..LOL.

I wouldn't go that far....

I just see a few similarities, with Wolves, to where Leicester were 2-3 years ago under Claude Puel.
An over reliance on players in certain positions, especially up front Jiminez/Vardy.

I thought, although admittedly there is still time, that Wolves would have invested some serious money this summer to try and correct/address that.

Just watched MOTD2: Ian Wright wanged on for 5 minutes about how brilliant Deli Alli was. I must have watched a different game because other than winning a dubious penalty I thought he has complete and utter garbage, and our midfield 2 completely outplayed their 3 by an absolute fucking mile. The agendas these talking heads have on MOTD is what makes it an absolute joke of a programme for me and why I rarely bother to watch.

Fosun don't want to put additional money into the club, it's never been their business model other than the initial flurry of signings when they took over.

Net spend has been as good as £0 for a while now and that isn't likely to materially change.

Sa impressed me today. pen always going to be given, but fuck me it is a soft penalty.
Semedo is so much better than he seemed last year.
Marcal - great for us in our half, but costs us in the oppo's half. Ait Nouri to start for me.
Saiss, was ok.
Kilman - had an excellent game. If he had more pace, he'd be worth millions I tell you. He has the ability to control the ball, and is comfortable with short and longer passes out of defence.
Coady - worried about him tbh. Looked off the pace.
Neves, poor 1st 10 mins, but then pretty imperious for most of the rest of the game.
Moutinho - someone tried to start the conversation in early summer, and I wasn't willing to take part, but I think we need to accept he isn't in our best 11 any more, and it fucking pains me to say that. Don't think he touched the ball in the first 20 mins?
Trincao - reminds me a lot of when neto first played. Obvious talent, decision making needs working on.
Raul, just glad to see him back tbh. He needs 2-3 months of football imo.
Adama, absolutely unplayable 1st half. However, has to score the one on one.

Enjoyed the forward thinking football. We absolutely 100% need to sign a CB though, and we absolutely need to work on defensive solidity, as we went walkabout on a couple of occasions.
Spurs really didn't look anything special at all.
The "letting the game flow" definitely improves the end user experience!

Absolutely amazing to spend time in the company of friends!

It's a bitter pill to swallow that we've got 0 points from our first two games based on the performances as a whole. The difference in how we set up is clear to see and it makes for exciting football that is just lacking that finishing touch. It's not very often that after 2 consecutive losses our fanbase would be quite positive about the football and the prospects of the season ahead but they definitely are.

It's a bit of an old cliche but if we keep playing like this someone is going to get an absolute hammering although to counter that i don't think we've got many goals in the team at all, even Jimenez isn't as clinical as you would like him to be. We should be more than fine though as if we do lay like this against the majority of other sides we will beat them.

Had the perfect view of the penalty in the first half behind the goal and thought at the time that Dele had bought it while understanding Sa gave the ref a decision to make. Biggest disappointment for me was i thought they were going to stop giving penalties when the attacking player initiates the contact but that clearly isn't the case after today.

Traore just had to drag the ball to his left and he was round Lloris and left with an empty net. If he does continue to make the runs in behind that he is doing then the goals will come, not as many as he should get but more than he has previously and then on most other occasions our final ball let us down or that final effort missed the target. For all i thought Marcal was very good there's a real big drop off in his play in the final third which we need to get round somehow but the same could be said of Semedo who just didn't make the most of any chances down his side.

I know many don't think we have the players to play a back 4 but for me Coady is seriously holding us back especially if he's the sole reason we're still playing 3 centre backs. He's not reading the game that well at the moment, he's becoming isolated more often due to our more expansive play, is very hesitant and his passing is well off or is very very slow. It's a tough thing to do when he's captain but this style of play and definitely a back 4 do not suit him so i do wonder if anyone would be interested in him.

It's a big week for us imo as we clearly need signings and quality ones at that but we're not quite sure what Fosun/Jeff are willing to spend but it's very annoying if they don't watch a performance like today and see what Bruno could be capable of doing with a full squad and a couple of quality additions. CB, ball carrying CM or a creative 10 are a must alongside another wide player/striker.

Fair enough.

I seem to recall a lot of media attention after your promotion though, about how the owners were going to push Wolves onto becoming regular contenders for Europe etc...Which is hard to do without investment.

It may just have been fans getting carried away to be fair.
