Wolves 0-1 Man Utd: Verdict Thread

If these three games were dotted throughout the season no one would be overly concerned.

The next couple of months will confirm it but I reckon under Lage we'll probably beat teams we should beat and lose narrowly or occasionally beat teams who are better than us whilst giving a good account of ourselves.

Under Nuno it was the opposite where we had a great record against better teams but often struggled against lesser teams. On balance I'd take the more attractive playing style over getting one over on the big teams occasionally. I think we're going to hand out some proper pastings this season, which we never really looked like doing under Nuno.

Obviously this is all dependent on whether we can play well and actually beat the smaller teams, but I'm quite confident we will given the chances we are creating against good defenders.

Don't think its true, revisionist and very selective in the sense it's become 18 months, disrespectful to what he achieved, ignores Nuno's fantastic record against the top 6 which I personally found exciting, so it just really grates me.
I'm not sure anyone has dismissed or forgotten what he did for the club. Promotion, Cup semi, European stint, crazy record against the top 6...seriously good times, and they will live long in the memory. There was a notable difference after lockdown though (been over this numerous times so don't need to drag it up again)

I understand annoyance to a point, but as mentioned there's a certain amount of assumption that things would have reverted. Possible, of course, but once things start to sour it can be very difficult to turn things around.

If you believe Spiers et al the loss at home to West Brom was the catalyst...we weren't good that game but if I remember correctly a lot of it was down to stupid errors by the players.

I think back to something like Burnley, who had been struggling to score all season, who then rolled up and demolished us. We were abject, absolutely abject, and if we hadn't already been more or less safe I'd have been seriously worried.

It takes something extraordinary for a manager to last more than a few years at any club. You can argue the merits of that as you like but it says something that the 5th longest tenured PL manager at the moment is Bielsa.

The fact that we're on zero points and goals isn't unlucky, it's downright freakish. We're creating, by the bucket load, and there's absolutely no way on earth we won't finish this season on 50+ points, and being one of the best teams to watch in the league.

The tune he's getting out of players that have spent the last four years practicing completely different tactics is really impressive. There have been some terrible decisions on the pitch, particularly when we've got overloads, and some rancid finishing, and just some plain old ridiculousness, but that will all come good.

We've dominated some really good teams, with budgets that far outstrip ours, and given time in this transition season and bit of backing in this and the next two windows, I think we've got half a chance of breaking into those European spots again

It's fair to say 'Brunoball' initially looks more attractive and exciting than last season's 'Nunoball', but there's a much larger sample of the latter, and at its best it was very effective in terms of results and points.

Something had to change after last season though. We weren't going back to the 2019 Nuno vintage, that's for sure, so either he changed or the manager changed, let's be honest

José Sá is fucking trash. Such a stupid bit of business we've done there. Hopefully we start converting chances at the other end because in tight games he's going to keep costing us points.
This is ridiculously ott, he's made one mistake in 3 games, yesterday bailed us out 2 or 3 times with his positioning......we can almost see it was at the other end that cost us.
Not defending his mistake yesterday but if you're expecting faultless displays from all or any of our players, its gunna be a long season for you.

We’ve just come out of a game against a team where 9 of their first 11 walk into our team. We’ve made them look very average, created enough to score at least 2 on an “average day”, and restricted them to nothing.

Unfortunately good players score from nothing and get the “luck” whereas average players don’t.

This all happening where our best and possibly only goal scorer put in a really poor performance.

Raul getting up to something close to normal, the balance of the “ridiculousness” as Del rightly puts it being restored, new signings coming in and more time on the training ground, we will have a good season.

This has to qualify as one of the most ridiculous posts I’ve read on here in ages. Absolute hot garbage.

Dermot Gallagher admitted that the challenge on Trincao by James after the block by a defender on the line, was missed by the ref and VAR and was definitely a foul, i.e. a penalty.

A fat lot of good it does us now, but another reason not to have the same officials again.

This is a great assessment and sums up my feelings too. The more we achieve those overloads/get into those positions the better our decision making will become too.

I think we've been top of this chart for every game so far.

At some point it isn't "bad luck" though, it's something else.

He didn’t get beaten though, he’s forced him to take a shot from a nothing position. Forwards get shots/crosses in. It happens. Same as Adama does it countless times a game, often getting in far better positions than Greenwood did.

If you are defending, it is your role to block/make it as difficult as possible to stop them shooting/crossing. Marcal failed at that.

As i said earlier, had Coady done the same he'd have got dogs abuse, much like how Doherty used to get criticised for it too as it's Marcal he's getting defended, odd.

The point being that finishing is a pretty critical element of football. If you keep missing big chances, that's not a badge of honour, it's a huge failing and it'll continually hurt you.

I'd also say that while we're entertaining to watch, so far we rarely force the opposition keeper into stunning save after stunning save - we're either failing to hit the target, or butchering positions where the chance ends up being more difficult than it ought to be. Might change against weaker opponents of course.

There's plenty to be optimistic about but clearly 0 points and 0 goals after three games is not the kind of trend you want to see continue for any length of time. We could probably do with 7+ points from September's fixtures and it isn't ideal to have that kind of pressure so early in the season.
